A drunk woman threw up, urinated in the street and verbally berated the police officer trying to help her, before spitting in their face.

Police officers found Ayesha Mervyn, 21, on the ground outside McDonald’s in Piccadilly Gardens, Manchester, when they were patrolling around 9pm on March 2.

They spotted her being sick on the floor, surrounded by people with grazes on her knees.

They noticed she was holding a bottle of prosecco and rosé wine after they rushed to help her, Manchester Evening News reported.

Mervyn, from Stretford, pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly and assaulting an emergency worker.

Manchester Magistrates’ Court heard that Mervyn staggered away and, after refusing to provide her details, she urinated.

She was sentenced to 20 weeks, suspended for 18 months.

Gareth Hughes, prosecuting, said it was clear Mervyn was not in control of what she was doing as she was sick in front of a shop window.

He added: ‘Her words were slurred, she could not stand and she was verbally aggressive towards the officers, refusing to provide her details.

‘One of the officers had hold of her right arm and then the defendant turned towards her and spat directly into her face, with the spit going into her hair, down the left side of her head and into her eye.

‘She was taken to the floor by the other officers while this officer attempted to get spit out of her eye.’

He added that members of the public handed the officer tissues and antibacterial wipes.

In a statement read to the court, the officer said she had never been spat at or assaulted in their career before and found it ‘degrading and embarrassing’.

The officer added: ‘It is the lowest form of physical abuse and it will have a long standing impact on my emotional state.

‘I would rather a punch to the face than being spat at. I was trying to help her and this is how I was treated.’

Mervyn was said to have previous convictions – including two assaults on police officers, a public order offence and shoplifting.

Defending Stephen Connor said Mervyn had a difficult upbringing and was subjected to exploitation and abuse.

He added that she needs a form of therapy to help her to come to term with these issues.

Mr Connor said: ‘There is genuine remorse. She is thoroughly ashamed and embarrassed of her actions and has apologised directly to the officer concerned.’

Mervyn was also sentenced to 20 days of rehabilitation activity requirements, ordered to pay £250 compensation to the officer and made subject of a 20-week curfew.
