The Duchess of Sussex has struck up a friendship with the former wife of Prince Harry’s uncle, Earl Spencer.

Meghan met Victoria Lockwood several times on the couple’s recent trip to Africa. The former model visited the couple in Cape Town and also dined with Meghan while Harry was away on solo engagements.

Ms Lockwood moved to South Africa with her ex-husband, Princess Diana’s brother, in 1995 and still lives there, although he moved back to the UK after their divorce 1997.

She clashed with the tabloids when photographs were taken of her in the grounds of a clinic and is likely to be sympathetic to Meghan and Harry concerns about the press.

At his sister’s funeral in 1997, Earl Spencer promised the Spencer family would always protect William and Harry ‘so that their souls are not simply immersed by duty’.

Ms Lockwood kept in touch with Harry, who was a pageboy at her 1989 wedding to Earl Spencer, and she was a guest at his and Meghan’s wedding last year. She has said she ‘had quite a bit in common’ with Diana: ‘eating disorders and broken marriages’.
