Dude with a sign! Die-hard Kochie fan makes a sign for the host on his final day on Sunrise

David ‘Kochie’ Koch marked his final day on Sunrise on Friday, after an incredible 21 years in the job.

And at the Channel Seven Sunrise studios in Sydney’s Martin Place, Kochie was greeted with a handmade sign by a diehard fan as viewers watched the TV veteran sign off for the final time.

One punter proudly held the sign up to the studio’s glass windows as Kochie was farewelled on air.

The man appeared to be channeling Instagram sensation Seth from the hit account, Dude With a Sign.

Alongside a series of pictures of Kochie and co-host Natalie Barr, the poster read: ‘We will miss you!’

At one point, Kochie was seen on air being given a guard of honour as he walked through the Sunrise studios for the very last time.

He was was greeted with applause, hugs and well wishes from the Sunrise team and his family.

Kochie jokingly ‘snubbed’ his replacement Matt Shirvington as he stepped onto the set of Sunrise for the final time on Friday.

In a cheeky dig at the moment Tracy Grimshaw awkwardly snubbed her ACA replacement Allison Langdon last year, Kochie pretended not to see Matt, 44, who is taking over the top job as co-host of Sunrise from next Monday.

After he kissed his wife Libby, Kochie jokingly blanked former Olympian Matt who appeared crestfallen after he tried to hug Kochie.

‘Just joking, just joking. I got you an Ally Langdon!’ Kochie said while laughing and embracing Matt.

‘You almost got me, you almost got me!’ Matt replied with a laugh.

He was later given a cake, hilariously decorated with a figure of himself in icing sugar, as he signed off air for the very last time.

‘It’s been a buzz, a spectacular job,’ Kochie said as he got emotional while cutting a cake while surrounded by the Sunrise team and his family.

‘This family, they’ve been with me through the best and worst times. Thank you for having me,’ he said.

Nat also shared a tribute to Kochie as she bid him farewell, breaking down in tears.

‘For the last 20 years I have sat at that desk with him and watched as he gets to the core of an interview and cuts through all the PR and all the bull. And I have learned so much,’ Nat said.

‘We have travelled across Australia and we have gone around the world and through thousands and thousands of hours of live television and we have laughed and laughed and we have cried.’

‘What is he really like? He’s one of the best friends that I will ever have in my life and I will treasure the years we have had on air. And I know we will have many more years, they will just look a little different. Congratulations.’

Kochie previously said he was leaving the hit show to focus on his own businesses and to enjoy more flexible work hours to spend time with his growing family.

He joined Sunrise to present finance reports in 2002 and in October that year became Chris Reason’s replacement when the journalist was diagnosed with cancer.

Matt Shirvington, 44, who will replace Kochie, said he was feeling ‘mixed emotions’ about the new gig.
