Expat shares his MASSIVE café culture shock in Australia: ‘This wouldn’t happen anywhere else’

A Dutch man has shared his surprise at visiting an Australian café only to be told that he could ‘pay tomorrow’ when he returned with a working credit card.
Max de Vries shared a video to his popular TikTok channel to explain what happened when he visited Single O cafe in Surry Hills, Sydney, before his bank cards had arrived in the mail.
‘So I just went to this coffee place to just… get a coffee and something to eat. But then they would only accept card, which I don’t have yet because it’s coming in the mail in a couple of days,’ he said.

‘So they said “oh that’s alright, just come back tomorrow”… okay cool? Imagine any big city in the world… this has never happened to me. They just trust that I’ll come back, so cool.’
Max’s admission saw him questioned in the comments section about returning to the café.
‘Yes, guys, don’t worry; I WILL be going back when I get my card and I’ll make sure to leave a tip as well,’ he said.
Many of his followers weren’t surprised by the generous offer in the inner city streets of Sydney.
‘Because a caffeinated and fed society is a happy and healthy society. Welcome to Australia,’ one man said.
‘Because Aussies are generally very laidback and trusting. Make it your regular coffee shop,’ said another.
Max’s admission saw him questioned in the comments section about returning to the café.
A third added: ‘That happened to me two weeks ago in Brisbane! I live in the USA and I was like huh?’
Max replied: ‘I’ve lived in the US for about two years myself, and yeah; cant imagine that happening over there. The culture shock is real’.
Other cafe managers in other states confirmed what Max was saying to be true, with a number of them saying they had extended the same friendliness to both their regulars and non-regulars.
