The Dutch royal family has shared a new portrait of Queen Maxima’s eldest daughter Princess Catharina-Amalia to mark her 16th birthday.

The Princess of Orange who will one day become the Queen of the Netherlands, beamed for the portrait, wearing a metallic grey top. 

Well-wishers were quick to flood the post with celebratory messages, after it was shared on the Instagram account of the royal house,

Many urged the 16-year-old to enjoy the occasion, following the recent revelation that she may be too caught up with school work to mark her birthday.

According to The Express, Queen Maxima told RTL Boulevard that Catharina-Amalia would have a lot of study commitments.

‘There won’t be a big celebration. She still has a lot of work to do for school, the end of the year is coming, Sinterklaas and all kinds of festivities,’ she said.

Queen Maxima who is an international financier by training, married into the royal family in 2002.

She and King Willem-Alexander have three daughters of which Catharina-Amalia is the eldest. 

Speaking of the heir apparent, the 48-year-old continued: ‘She is growing up fast and beautifully.

‘She is an amazing daughter, an amazing friend, I am so very proud of her.’

According to the royal family’s website Catharina-Amalia enjoys horse riding and musical activities, including singing. 

Celebrating her birthday today, she stunned by styling her hair in a naturally straight style with a subtle pink lip gloss.

Rejoicing at the occasion, one royal fan wrote: ‘Congratulations Princess Amalia with your 16th birthday, I wish you many beautiful, healthy years and today a super cozy Sweet Sixteen with lots of fun.’

Another said: ‘Congratulations beautiful girl! Hope you get the time to become who you are! Celebrate life! Have a very nice day.’

‘Amalia, congratulations on your birthday and have a nice day together,’ added a third.
