Dying Christmas trees pile up on upmarket London street

A pile of Christmas trees on a plush London street has left residents baffled and concerned about the danger they pose.

One mound of more than 25 browning and green trees of differing heights have been stacked up by the road in the London borough of Hammersmith and Fulham.

Residents started noticing large piles of trees appearing in and around Bishop’s Road in West London, particularly outside a four bedroom terraced house which can sell for up to £2 million, since the start of 2018.

Rusin Radulov, 30, lives in a property in front of where the trees have been left and believes they could pose a danger.

Mr Radulov said: ‘I have not been back long but my housemate said they have been there at least a couple of weeks, since new year.

As many as 25 Christmas trees were left in a pile on Bishop’s Road in Fulham this morning

‘I don’t think someone came from out of the area and just dumped them, I think they have come from inside people’s houses.

‘I’m not sure when the council will take them away but hopefully it will be soon.

‘I’m a motorbike rider for my job and the needles from the trees can make it slippery on the road.

‘When it gets dry the wind will carry them around as well.’

There are a further nine trees, six in a pile and a further three left alone, down Bishop’s Road, with needles scattered across the road where trees may have been left and have now been taken away.

Local resident Claire Payne, 37, said: ‘The council take them away to be recycled.

‘I put my tree outside my house and it’s gone. So either it’s been taken or moved over there.

‘I’m not sure who has moved them, either the council or someone who cares a lot about where Christmas trees go.

‘I’ve seen a lot of other piles down the roads towards the station.’

There are also another two big separate piles of around 15 and eight trees in another adjacent road, with another three single trees also on the road.

Meanwhile 17 trees were scattered on another road.

Susan Rathbone, 41, another local resident, said: ‘I don’t know if they are from this road or if they have been brought from other roads, but it looks like they have been moved there deliberately, probably by the council.

‘They can’t take them all at once so so I think they bunch them together to collect them at a later date.

‘It’s not great when the piles block the whole pavement and take up parking spaces.

‘It makes it difficult for mums with buggies to get past and there’s no way a wheelchair could get through the small gap that’s been left.

‘Hopefully the council will come to take them soon as they have been there for a few weeks now.’

A Hammersmith and Fulham spokesman said the trees were left outside for collection as part of a recycling scheme by the council.

He added: ‘We are delighted our free Christmas tree collection service has been so popular with residents in Hammersmith & Fulham. Last year we collected and recycled 106 tonnes of them, and we hope to beat that figure this year.’

Full details of the scheme can be seen here.
