An eagle with a seven-foot wingspan has broken free from Warwick Castle after escaping in front of spectators during a show.

Stellar sea eagle Nikita soared into the sky in front of crowds of families during yesterday’s evening performance.

The castle has issued an urgent appeal and believes the bird is resting in an ‘open space’.

A statement on the castle website said: ‘Help Find Nikita! Our awe-inspiring Stellar Sea Eagle, Nikita, flew off during today’s show.

‘She has a 7ft wing span and will most likely be sitting in an open space by now. If you spot her, please contact 01926 406 600.’

The eagle is brown and white in colour and has a striking bright yellow beak and talons that are the same colour.

Warwick Castle posted the appeal on its Facebook, where one user criticised the notion of keeping birds in captivity.

Manuela Perez de Haro wrote of the escape: ‘That’s a sign that these animals belong to the wild and not on cages.’

But other users expressed sympathy for the castle, as Rachel Reynolds wrote: ‘Hope she’s found safe and sound.

‘Freedom isn’t something she knows so she’s probably terrified and wishes to be home.’
