Easter long weekend Sydney police blitz catches driver allegedly high on ice

A driver who allegedly crashed into an RBT site while high on ice and fled is just one of 48,000 motorists already tested for drugs and alcohol by police this Easter long weekend.

The 35-year-old man driving a Mitsubishi Pajero allegedly crashed into the police stop on The Horsley Drive in Fairfield, Sydney’s west, about 12.30am Friday.

He fled the scene before being stopped by officers nearby, where he allegedly tested positive for ice, police said.

The man was arrested as part of Easter long weekend traffic operation Merret, which will see motorists charged double demerits for infringements.

The massive police operation has seen a boost in the amount of officers on the roads targeting motorists for dangerous behaviour.

DAY ONE: EASTER TRAFFIC OPERATION

Total infringements issued (not speeding): 5024

Speed infringements: 1367

Breath tests: 48,227

Drink-driving charges: 25

Lives lost: 0

Police said the operation – which started Thursday morning and will continue until Monday night – is also aimed at educating drivers on safe behaviour.

Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy said more random breath tests had been conducted this year compared to last year, after 48,227 motorists were stopped on day one.

‘Nearly one third of people arrested for drink-driving were aged between 50 and 59 and 20 per cent were aged between 20 and 29 years,’ he said.

‘We will not tolerate drivers getting behind the wheel while under the influence and putting people’s lives at risk.’

A total of 25 drink driving charges and 1367 speed infringements had been issued by Friday morning.

The 35-year-old alleged drug driver was charged with failing to stop, driving with a cancelled licence, and holding suspected stolen goods.

The man was granted bail and is due to appear before Fairfield Local Court next month.

Another incident saw a man arrested for allegedly driving his motorcycle nearly twice the speed limit on Victoria Road in Rozelle, in Sydney’s inner-west, about 5.15am Thursday.

His licence was suspended for six months and he was issued an infringement notice, police said.
