‘I think she’s brilliant!’ Ed Sheeran offers to perform at New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s wedding to Clarke Gayford

Ed Sheeran has offered to perform at the wedding of New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and television presenter Clarke Gayford this summer.

Last week, the 40-year-old politician admitted she wanted to have the British singer at her upcoming nuptials, but was worried Covid protocols would get in the way.

Speaking to Kiwi radio hosts Jono and Ben on The Hits, she said: ‘I feel like the quarantine that may be attached to it may not be worth his while.’

Jacinda added: ‘I’m sure without that he would be keen. I’m kidding. I definitely don’t think there’s any circumstances where he would ever want to play a wedding.’

Ed and Jacinda first met in 2018 when he visited the politician’s Auckland home, where she baked him cheese scones.

When appearing on The Hits to promote his new single Bad Habits days later, Ed insisted he was delighted by the food and went on to speak very highly of Jacinda.

Asked if he would perform at their wedding, Ed said: ‘Do you know what, I would make myself available if I was free, to play her wedding. I think she’s brilliant.’

Ed continued: ‘I think that she is the best human being on earth. I know, like, politics is politics and people in New Zealand will have differences of opinion, but in England she is seen as just… it. We love her. I love her.

‘I think she’s what you need in a leader. New Zealand should be really proud…the whole world has looked at New Zealand and been like, these guys have got it right.’

The chart topper also recently revealed he’d considered emigrating to the country, saying he’d love to live on the North Island.

He decided against a move to the other side of the world as he is settled in Suffolk with wife Cherry Seaborn and their daughter Lyra Antarctica, 10 months.

He told ZM’s Fletch, Vaughan, and Megan: ‘I married a girl whose county I’m from, my parents are two minutes away, her parents are ten minutes away.

‘All of our best friends live in the town, if I didn’t have such roots in England I would have bought a house in Wellington 10 years ago.’

However, he revealed he will be visiting soon, adding: ‘Hopefully, fingers crossed, I’ll be over there [New Zealand] by the end of the year.

‘If all goes well, I’ll be there by the end of the year.’
