Ed Sheeran upsets neighbours with plans to erect 6.5ft fence around his Suffolk estate

Ed Sheeran is erecting a 6.5ft tall fence around rapidly-expanding his Suffolk estate to ensure privacy, but his neighbours and the local parish aren’t happy.

The Grammy Award-winning artist, 28, lodged plans with East Suffolk Council to build the fence around his neighbours property which he purchased for £875,000 after complaining about his building work.

Sheeran’s rapidly expanding estate – dubbed ‘Sheeranville’ – began in 2012, when he bought a farmhouse near Framlingham in Suffolk, for £895,000 before buying up four neighbouring homes.

Now the star has lodged proposals to build a 6.5ft high fence and a gate that will completely surround his recent property purchase as part of his wider plan to shield off his estate from prying eyes, locals claim.

After amassing an estimated £160million fortune, the superstar singer has set about creating his own extraordinary estate – dubbed ‘Sheeranville’ – including five properties bought for a total of £3.7 million. Pictured, his estate last week

One neighbour said: ‘Almost immediately after purchasing the property, he lodged these plans which seem strange but looking at the wider picture there is a pattern emerging.

‘The type of fencing proposed in the plans is more or less the same used around a significant part of the estate and looks unsightly.

‘Several locals have discussed this issue as it stands out. But Ed has and is putting hedges in front of parts of it.

‘The fencing is high enough to shield what is going on from the public eye and it ensures that Ed can have the privacy he needs.

They added: ‘You do get fans wanting to see where he lives and the area has partly become a tourist hotspot because of it.’

At a recent meeting the issue was raised, and agreed that the fence should be located behind a hedge because of its ‘visual impact’ on the local area.

Ruth Hart, clerk at the local parish council, said: ‘Following a meeting of the Parish Council on May 20th councillors voted unanimously to recommend approval for the proposed fencing and gates fronting the highway, on the following recommendation: Providing the proposed fencing is located behind the existing hedging which will soften the visual impact.’

After a parish council meeting, Sheeran’s planning agent amended the plans so the 6.5ft high fencing would be hidden behind a ‘Pyracantha hedgerow.’

Case officer Natalie Webb said in a council report about the plans: ‘The proposal seeks to erect a 2m high close boarded wooden fence, similar to the neighbouring property, along the frontage of the site.

‘The fence will be softened by the planting of a Pyracantha hedgerow and the agent has confirmed that the gates will be set back 5m from the highway.

‘The gate and posts are set to the east of the frontage of the site, located on the existing access.’

'The fencing is high enough to shield what is going on from the public eye and it ensures that Ed can have the privacy he needs,' the neighbour added (property where 6.5ft fencing is being proposed)

The proposal of this new fence comes after photos showed bales of hay used as a shield to stop neighbours seeing the wildlife pond on his estate they fear he is using as a swimming pool, last month.

He also lodged plans to build a 32ft-tall chapel but councillors rejected the proposals following a backlash from neighbours.

The pop superstar placed the fence around one side of the pool which was visible from the lane that runs alongside.
