Don’t you miss the Queen? Michelle Obama has revealed that she received a surprise invitation to tea while she was on a family holiday to London with her mother, two daughters and their godmother.
And the tourists were entertained at Buckingham Palace the whole afternoon.
‘We just went for a regular trip and Her Majesty heard that we were there and invited us over,’ says the wife of former US president Barack Obama.
‘This is how kind she was to our family. They said, ‘Just come by. Her Majesty wants you to see the palace.’ Nobody was there.’
Speaking on a US television interview with Conan O’Brien, she adds: ‘We’re sitting just in some room in the palace and who comes down to greet us but Her Majesty, just with her purse [handbag], in her house.

‘And I was, like, ‘You do carry that purse everywhere’. You wanted to be, like, ‘Where are you going – you’re at home?’ It’s with her everywhere.’
She adds: ‘The Queen showed us the gold room. There is a room full of gold. Everything in the palace was, like, ‘This is what we were trying to do in the White House’.
‘Our rose garden was, like, ‘meh’. We were in a buggy riding through the roses forever. I was, like, ‘Now, this is a rose garden.’ She let the kids sit in her car. We were there for, like, an afternoon.’

The band will turn the volume down by touring with a full orchestra this summer. But don’t expect to see Daltrey and Pete Townshend, 77, enjoying each other’s company off stage.
‘Me and Pete don’t socialise at all. It’s a working relationship. We’re two very different people. And may it remain that way.’

Celebrated scriptwriter James Graham cheers on Harry Kane’s goals as he puts the finishing touches to Dear England, his new National Theatre play portraying Gareth Southgate’s transformation of the team.
‘I’m watching the Euro qualifiers and I’m hoping to have some time with Gareth next week,’ Graham tells me at the Broadcasting Press Guild awards. Joseph Fiennes plays Southgate in the drama, which tells how psychologist Pippa Grange tried to help the players conquer their penalty shoot-out fears. But Graham can’t engineer a happy ending.
‘I really hope Gareth lifts a trophy with this team but our story ends with England’s defeat to Italy in the Euro 2020 final.’
