Roma striker Edin Dzeko has admitted he was ‘pleased’ that Chelsea wanted to sign him in January but remains content in the Italian capital.

The Bosnian was on Antonio Conte’s long list of striking targets but a deal failed to come to fruition with Olivier Giroud eventually joining from Arsenal.

Dzeko, who scored 72 goals for Manchester City between 2011 and 2016, has revealed that he did hold talks with Chelsea but was happy to remain in Serie A.

‘I am happy in Rome, with life in Rome and I don’t like to look back at media rumours,’ the former Wolfsburg man told SportCentar in his homeland.

‘They are sometimes true, sometimes just pumping for clicks. There was an offer, negotiations and I was really pleased that Chelsea wanted me.

‘That is all I want to say about that, while I am enjoying in Rome.’

Dzeko will be hopeful of firing Roma into the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday night when the Italians take on Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Ukrainians lead 2-1 following the first leg but Cengiz Ünder’s away goal for Roma keeps them in contention.

Dzeko became the first player to score 50 goals in three of Europe’s top five leagues when he netted a brace as Roma stunned Napoli 4-2 earlier this month.
