Edwina Bartholomew gives emotional health update as she makes surprise return to Sunrise after taking time off amid her shock cancer diagnosis

Edwina Bartholomew has made a surprise return to Sunrise after taking time off following her shock cancer diagnosis.

The TV presenter, 41, revealed that she has been diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia – a type of blood and bone marrow cancer – live on air earlier this month.

Edwina, who was diagnosed in July, said she would be taking time off from Sunrise in September before cutting down on her work with the Channel 7 program.

However, she surprised fans by making an unexpected return to TV screens on Friday to report on the hotly-anticipated AFL Grand Final live from Melbourne.

Edwina said she wanted to be back on air in time for the showdown between the Brisbane Lions and the Sydney Swans, admitting she didn’t want to miss it.

She also gave her co-stars Matt Shirvington and Natalie Barr an update on her health as she reassured them that she was doing ‘well’ following her time off.

‘I’m going so well, I’m so well rested, I have had a huge gigantic warm embrace from Sunrise viewers and I didn’t want to miss today,’ Edwina said upon her return to the show.

‘I love [the AFL grand final], as we all do. I wanted to be back in time, not just for the mini jaffles, but to see you all and be here for such a wonderful weekend in Melbourne.’
