Egypt open the door to Mohamed Salah missing the Olympics to start next season with Liverpool

Egypt open the door to Mohamed Salah missing the Olympics to start the 2021-22 Premier League season with Liverpool as their coach insists he will only head to Tokyo with ‘an agreement between all parties’

  • Mohamed Salah was named in Egypt’s provisional squad for the Tokyo Olympics
  • But Egypt’s Under-23 coach insists that does not guarantee Salah’s participation
  • Salah would likely miss the start of the Premier League if he played in Tokyo
  • Without ‘an agreement between all parties’, Salah will not play in the Olympics

Egypt under-23 coach Shawky Gharib has named Mohamed Salah in his provisional squad for the Olympic Games but insists the Liverpool forward won’t play unless there is ‘an agreement between all parties.’

The Tokyo Games takes place from July 23-August 8 and with each country allowed three players over the age of 23, 28-year-old Salah could star for his country.

However, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has previously stated he would want a close look at Egypt’s preparation programme before making a decision on whether Salah could play, given he would likely miss the start of the Premier League season if he did play.

Klopp has to decide whether to allow Salah to play in the Olympics with the likelihood of him missing the start of the Premier League season

And Gharib admitted that Salah would not play in Tokyo unless there was an agreement between Salah, Liverpool and Egypt.

‘I included 10 over-age players in the preliminary squad to choose from them in the final list,’ Gharib said, as reported by Egyptian outlet Al-Ahram

‘It is not only up to us to decide Salah’s situation in joining the Olympic team as we just called him and are waiting for his decision along with his club.

‘There should be an agreement between all parties.’

Egypt booked their place at the delayed Olympic Games after winning the Under-23 Nations Cup on home soil in 2019.

While a start date for the 2021-22 Premier League season has not yet been announced, the usual mid-August date would likely mean Salah missing at least the opening game, should he play in Tokyo.

Despite a difficult season for the team, with the champions currently positioned in sixth, Salah is still the Premier League’s top goalscorer with 17 goals.

He has won the Champions League and the Premier League since arriving from Roma in 2017 and also represented his country at the 2018 World Cup.
