Elderly Sydney couple finally get married after 47 years together

An elderly couple who fell in love in the 1970s have finally tied the knot after 47 years together.

Fernando Mendes and Marinha Barros, originally from Portugal, have been inseparable since meeting in Australia nearly five decades ago.

But their relationship hasn’t been smooth sailing.

The 82-year-old cancer-stricken woman has been receiving palliative care in hospital after she was diagnosed with advanced melanoma.

But the pair have proven their love can overcome any challenge after they got married at an intimate ceremony in the chapel at Bankstown Hospital on March 22.

Speaking to Sunrise, a delighted Marinha said: ‘I was really happy. The time Fernando told me we were getting married, so happy.’  

Surrounded by family and friends, the loving duo exchanged their vows.

Canterbury-Bankstown Express reported the bride shared her vows in Portuguese: ‘Fernando, my friend and life partner, who would have thought that this day would come true?

In sickness and in health, the newlyweds made a promise to spend the rest of their lives together.

When the couple exchanged their rings, Marinha said to her new doting husband: ‘Never take this off’.

The couple met in Australia nearly 50 years ago – and have been together since. 

‘After a few weeks, I told her to come and live with me,’ Fernando said.
