The gorilla’s death inspired global mourning, criticism and satire.

The release of Musk’s apparent tribute song to Harambe came just two days before April Fools’ Day.

Musk tweeted a link to the song, as well as the so-called album art featuring a photo of the gorilla and the fictitious name of his record label ‘Emo G Records’.

‘I’m disappointed that my record label failed,’ he later tweeted.

The two-minute song features a digitally-modified voice.

The lyrics include: ‘RIP Harambe, sipping on some Bombay/We on our way to heaven, Amen, Amen/RIP Harambe, smoking on some strong, aye/In gorilla zoo and we thinking about you.’

The song was played 468,000 times in its first 48 hours.

Musk is dating Canadian musician Grimes.

Their relationship made headlines in September last year after Musk was sued by the SEC for tweeting that he was taking Tesla private for $420-a-share – a move that regulators dubbed fraudulent and misleading.

After the privatization scandal, rapper Azaelia Banks claimed to have been in Musk’s home when he posted the tweet. Banks, who said she was there to record a duet with Grimes, alleged that Musk was high on drugs at the time.

Musk went on to settle with the SEC by stepping down as the company’s chairman and agreeing, along with Tesla, to pay $20 million each in fines.
