Elon Musk takes longest break from Twitter in years as he faces legal woes, ‘personal issues’ and employee strife at Tesla and SpaceX

  • Musk has not tweeted since June 21, his longest streak of silence on the platform since October 2017
  • The billionaire is a prolific tweeter who frequently discusses politics and uses the platform to announce major business plans
  • One of Musk’s children, Vivian Jenna Wilson, recently decided that she no longer wants to be related to him ‘in any way’
  • Tesla laid off 200 workers in San Mateo and is being sued by a group of Black employees who allege racial discrimination at the carmaker

Elon Musk is taking his longest break from Twitter in almost five years as he deals with a range of problems at his companies, including legal woes, financial obstacles and employee strife, along with ‘personal issues.’

The billionaire, who is in the process of acquiring Twitter for $44 billion and tweets frequently about everything from politics and business to fertility and cheese, last posted the evening of June 21 in response to a tweet about SpaceX and its dealings with the FCC.

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO is also facing the fallout from his daughter, Vivian Jenna Wilson – who was recently granted permission to change her name from Xavier Alexander Musk – saying she no longer wants to be related to her biological father ‘in any way.’

Wilson, 18, adopted her mother Justine’s maiden name as part of her transitioning process.

Musk, who has fathered a total of eight children, has not commented publicly on the matter.

This week, 15 Black former or current Tesla employees filed a lawsuit in California state court against the carmaker that alleges they were subjected to racial abuse and harassment at its factories.

The workers claim they were subjected to a wide range of racist commends and behavior by colleagues and managers, including the use of terms such as the n-word, ‘slavery,’ and ‘plantation,’ according to Reuters.

All of this comes as Musk has said that supply chain chaos means his gigafactories are ‘giant money furnaces.’

‘The past two years have been an absolute nightmare of supply chain interruptions, one thing after another, and we’re not out of it yet,’ Musk said.

Earlier this week, Tesla shut down its entire San Mateo office and laid off 200 workers – not long after Musk sent a note to employees saying that cuts would be needed due to the poor state of the economy.

Analysts also expect Tesla to deliver fewer vehicles for the second quarter when it announces those numbers – about 250,000 instead of previous estimates of 295,078 – Reuters reports.

Last month, SpaceX fired several employees who were reportedly involved in organizing a letter that denounced Musk’s behavior and was signed by hundreds of workers at the aerospace firm.

Cowen analyst Jeffrey Osborne told the wire service that ‘investors are growing fatigued with Elon’s rants’ on the Twitter acquisition and politics, among other topics.

Musk’s usage of Twitter, which often includes official announcements and replies to a wide range of users, is atypical among those with more than 100 million followers.

According to a Wall Street Journal analysis of his tweets, this is Musk’s longest stretch of silence on the platform since October 2017.
