Emma Raducanu’s demolition of Maria Sakkari ‘is worthy of a world No 1’, says former British No 1 Greg Rusedski… as he tips the 18-year-old Brit to go on and win ‘MULTIPLE’ Grand Slam titles
Former British No 1 Greg Rusedski believes Emma Raducanu’s performance to reach the US Open final is ‘worthy of a world No 1’.
The British teenager produced a truly emphatic performance under the lights on the Arthur Ashe showcourt and yet she showed no signs of finding them too bright in her first Grand Slam semi-final to beat Maria Sakkari.
Rusedski, who tipped world No 18 Sakkari to victory before the match, was left near-speechless at the end as Raducanu ran out 6-1, 6-4 winner.
‘I was dumfounded,’ Rusedski told Amazon Prime Sport.
‘This was something special that we just saw here. That performance is worthy of a World No 1, a US Open champion, multiple Grand Slam titles.
‘The calmness, the composure, the belief, the handling of the big points.
‘This was her first semi final of a major and it was like she was playing the first round of this event! It was astonishing.’
Annabel Croft added: ‘I didn’t expect this match to pan out as it has.
‘I really thought Sakkari would come out and compete and give [Raducanu] a run for her money. But she was like all the rest of them that been slain already.
‘She could not cope with the ball-striking, the timing, the precision and the beautiful serving.’
