Emmerdale starts landmark 50th celebrations with an incredible Woolpack cake

Emmerdale will celebrate its 50th anniversary in October. 

And with the countdown well and truly on, the soap’s cast and producers marked the occasion with a huge cake of the show’s pub the Woolpack – after  bosses said the show’s anniversary month would leave viewers ‘on the edge of their seats’.

Taking to the set in Leeds a number of the soap’s actors posed with the cake outside the delicious treat’s real life inspiration.

Emmerdale’s celebrations will culminate with an action packed month of shows later this year, with storylines currently under wraps.

The huge dessert featured the iconic building along with a red telephone box and the fictional village’s street sign. 

Posing proudly with the cake was Fiona Wade (Priya Sharma) Chris Bisson (Jai Sharma) Lisa Riley (Mandy Dingle) Mark Charnock (Marlon Dingle) Zoe Henry (Rhona Goskirk) Jay Kontzle (Billy Fletcher) and Harriet Finch (Katherine Dow Blyton).

Speaking about the show’s enduring success executive producer Jane Hudson said: ‘Emmerdale celebrating 50 years is a huge achievement and to be the executive producer at such an exciting time is an honour’. 

‘For five decades, Emmerdale has kept its audience entertained with incredible storylines and memorable characters’. 

She went on to say: ‘We want to make sure our 50th birthday month is a treat for all our loyal viewers and has them gripped to the edge of their seats as the stories unfold. We are very proud to be a jewel in Yorkshire’s crown and want to make sure we celebrate our wonderful village and everyone who lives there’. 

Before adding: ‘Across the month you will see stories which have you in tears, make you laugh out loud and of course, amaze you with some of the most epic stunts you will have ever seen. The Emmerdale team is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to creating drama as its very best, and never before has this been more true.’

It comes after the cast revealed they shed real tears as they filmed scenes which saw Marlon struggle to walk down the aisle to his bride Rhona recently.

Woolpack chef Marlon suffered a terrifying stroke earlier this year and he struggled to stand to say his vows and his wedding to Rhona.

According to the Mirror, actress Zoë, 48, said: ‘We were in tears. It was brilliantly written and the emotion came naturally for both of us when it was needed. 

The storyline has been such a difficult watch. But the wedding shows the light. 

‘Stroke has affected lots of people, including my family, so it’s important we see the light. People need that. Soap reflects real life, but it also needs to bring a bit of joy.’

Mark said he also found the scenes – set to air next Thursday – difficult to film, describing the scenes as ‘relentlessly moving’.
