Emotional ties: Presenter Mariella Frostrup

Presenter Mariella Frostrup

This is a wedding photograph of Jason [McCue, a human rights lawyer] and me in the middle of the Panamanian jungle in 2003. We were married on the back of a troop carrier decorated with palm fronds and two friends were witnesses. It was perfect.

We don¿t really have heirlooms in my family: I barely have photographs of me as a child. So this very beautiful, old-fashioned Victorian paste brooch from my Norwegian paternal grandmother is a precious thing. I love to wear it on my tweed coat.

I put these 3D photographic figures of my children, Dan and Molly [now 11 and 13], in a bell jar for Jason¿s Christmas present last year. I love the way it has frozen them in a particular time, with Dan dabbing and Molly standing a little self-consciously.

These holiday photographs of me and my best friend, the actress Gina Bellman, were taken in the Bahamas in the mid-90s, before husbands and babies. We make one another laugh, no matter what life throws at us.

I designed this silver bangle* with Boodles about five years ago to support The Great Initiative [Gender Rights and Equality Action Trust]. It¿s inspired by the Irish Claddagh ring ¿ I wanted it to be something women could buy for each other as a symbol of sisterhood.

I¿m addicted to listening to my Roberts radio morning, noon and night. It is a brilliant way of keeping informed. It¿s a great joy working for radio ¿ I don¿t have to dress up or wear make-up. And in this increasingly frenetic world, it constantly surprises and inspires me.

People misconstrue my accent as being posh, but we were brassic when I was growing up in Ireland. Yet, poor as we were, my mother taught me to look after my skin. Elixseri serums are my new addiction ¿ my skin drinks them up and some lines have disappeared.

Damien Hirst made this drawing of me one drunken afternoon in the Groucho Club in the 90s. It¿s a reminder of being young, single and having such a great time, working with all sorts of extraordinarily creative people who have now become friends.

I¿ve been reading books about the pioneering female travellers who have fallen into obscurity. I¿m compiling an anthology for publication next year to celebrate their fearlessness. It¿s important we write women back into history.
