England 1-0 Slovakia – PLAYER RATINGS

England qualified for the 2018 World Cup as group winners with a 1-0 victory over Slovenia on Thursday night.

Gareth Southgate’s men delivered a below-par performance but Harry Kane secured the win when he netted the only goal of the game in added time.

Joe Hart 5.5

Fortunate to get away with it when he raced from the box and clipped Josip Ilicic. A change looms.

Kyle Walker 6

The free kick man: who knew? Good attacking outlet but left England too open.

John Stones 6

Look much shakier than he has of late at City and picked up a booking as well.

Gary Cahill 5.5

The space inbetween the centre halves at times was alarming: Cahill needs to take more command.

Ryan Bertrand 6

Linked well with Rashford and attacking play good – but England’s desire to get forward left them exposed at times.

Eric Dier 5.5

There didn’t seem to be the usual intelligence in that position. Too often there were gaps between the centre halves and midfield which Slovenia could exploit.

Jordan Henderson 6

Forced good save from Jan Oblak in the first half and attempted to probe but contributed to England’s lack of shape at times.

Alex Oxlade Chamberlain 5

The lack of game time showed and the slump continues. Odd choice to start and taken off on 64 minutes.

Raheem Sterling 6.5

Good break and the pass for Rashford on 63 minutes but when he didn’t have that space often, he didn’t have enough guile.

Marcus Rashford 8

A shining star amidst the gloom. Always creating and confident. The downside? That chipped finish, cleared off the line.

Harry Kane 6

Decent effort on goal early on but there was never the space or the right ball to do what he does best.

Gareth Southgate 5.5

Hard to hammer a man who has just qualified for the World Cup – but play like that and they won’t go far.

Referee: Felix Zwayer (Germany) 5.5

Missed the early penalty shout but thereafter was authoritative.
