UEFA are exploring the option of holding a one nation European Championships next summer, leaving England’s plans for the tournament in limbo.

European football’s governing body’s original plan was to hold the Euros, which was due to take place earlier this summer but was cancelled due to the Covid pandemic, in 12 different cities across the continent.

But it is understood UEFA are re-considering the original design of the delayed tournament, which is due to kick off in June.

There is a growing sense the tournament should revert back to a more traditional format of holding it one country.

Sources claim the situation is live and will continually change as the pandemic develops between now and next summer.

The governing body are said to be keeping an open mind on how the tournament should be staged – including in which country if they decide against a cross-borders Euros.

Indeed, Covid rates in potential host nations will inevitably play a key role in determining which countries are considered.

But the fact UEFA are looking at holding the delayed Euro 2020 in one country indicates their original plan of having 12 host nations is in serious jeopardy.

The development leaves the Football Association’s plans for the tournament uncertain.

England were due to play their group games at Wembley, while the latter of the stages – including the final – were due to be held at the national stadium.

But it remains to be seen whether England will be considered as a host nation given increasing Covid rates and the fact the Government have just announced a second national lockdown.

Equally, the fact supporters are still to be let into grounds is likely to be another consideration for UEFA as they formulate a new plan for next summer’s scheduled tournament.
