England fans react after out-of-form Harry Maguire scores opener against Albania

‘Does he think that makes up for being horrendous all season?’: England fans SLAM Harry Maguire for cupping his ears in celebration after scoring their opener against Albania following poor form for Manchester United

  • The Manchester United defender cupped his ears in celebration at his finish
  • Fans have mocked Maguire for the celebration after his poor club form

Roy Keane and Ian Wright branded Harry Maguire’s celebration as ’embarrassing’ after the Manchester United defender opened the scoring for the Three Lions against Albania.

The out-of-form centre back headed home after nine minutes, as England romped to a 5-0 half-time lead as Harry Kane scored a hat-trick and Jordan Henderson also got on the scoresheet.

Maguire raced away after his celebration by cupping his ears, perhaps in response to his critics following his poor displays for Manchester United this season.

‘He puts his hand to his ear. He’s like shutting the critics up but I think that’s embarrassing,’ Keane said at half-time on ITV.

‘He’s been a disgrace the past few months for Manchester United. He thinks he scores there, he’s going to shut his critics up. Embarrassing.’

Fellow pundit Ian Wright agreed with the former Manchester United man, urging Maguire to ‘just play the game’.

‘The thing is, you just don’t need to do that,’ he said. ‘You look at that now and you think you don’t need to do that now because you’ve still got a lot of football to play.

‘So don’t give them the opportunity to say, “right, we’ve got him”. Just play the game Harry.’

Meanwhile fans were quick to slam the celebration as social media flocked to react with one fan labelling it as ‘shameless’.

Another Twitter user posted: ‘Harry Maguire would be entitled to celebrate like that if he hadn’t been completely s*** and at fault for numerous goals at Manchester United this season.’

Matt Chaplin commented: ‘Harry Maguire has really silenced his critics with that goal against Albania’s part timers.

A Manchester United fan suggested the celebration was aimed at the club’s supporters.

UtdSam tweeted: ‘Maguire just isn’t captain material celebrating like that clearly aimed at United fans after scoring a header against Albania when he conceded 7 goals in 2 games to our biggest rivals.’

There has been some suggestion since joining Manchester United from Leicester, that his form for England has been better than for his club.

Maguire was one of the star performers for England as they reached the final of the European Championships in the summer.

Liam Jeffrey tweeted: ‘What was that celebration all about from Maguire? If he steps up for United like he does for England then he won’t be criticised. Simple.’
