England fans take over square and Portuguese hotel is forced to escort guests for their own safety

England fans forced a Portuguese hotel to escort guests out through an alleyway full of urinating Englishmen due to safety concerns.

Belgian lab worker Jan Aerts tweeted about the shocking treatment, and also said there was beer being thrown and shouting as he was removed from the Porto hotel.

The supporters are in Porto for the Nations League, which will see England play against Holland in tonight’s semi-final.

Following last night’s clashes between England fans and Portuguese police, a 23-year-old and 26-year-old Englishman have been arrested for assault and resisting arrest.

The FA has branded fans responsible for the trouble ‘not true England supporters’ and an ’embarrassment to the team’.

Tweeting about the sickening state of affairs, Belgian Jan Aerts, who was in the city for a conference, said: ‘This is ridiculous. England soccer fans took over the square in front of my hotel in Porto.

‘Felt sorry for the hotel receptionist as he had to lead me through an backdoor and alleyway shoulder-to-shoulder full of urinating Englishmen just to get out.

‘Beer thrown, shouting.’

He added in a second tweet: ‘Nice to walk over the cobble stones in beautiful Porto through a literal river of English p***’.

Speaking to MailOnline he said that the square was ‘littered with bottles’ after the fans had left.

He also posted a picture of a large crowd of football supporters drinking beer in the square, spilling alcohol and dumping bottles on the pavement.

Portuguese police said two English fans were arrested after they were baton-charged at a packed fan area in Porto.

A third fan was also identified after violence broke out in Liberdade Square in the city centre just after 8pm yesterday but was not detained as their behaviour ‘wasn’t criminal’.

‘He will not be taken to court but the information we have on him has been shared with the Metropolitan Police,’ said the Portuguese Police.

The Met Police were also praised for assisting with identifying people causing trouble in the country by a well-placed Portuguese police source.

‘The role of the Metropolitan Police has been very important in these days,’ he said.

‘They are helping us to identify more dangerous groups, so we can maintain a certain distance so everyone can enjoy themselves.

‘We are going to continue to maintain a low-profile, with a view to strengthening our response when there are indications the situation could get out of control.

‘Our wish is that the fans can enjoy a party experience and leave Portugal happy with what they have encountered.’

The trouble reportedly started after a Portugal supporter threw a drink in the air to celebrate Cristiano Ronaldo putting Portugal 1-0 up in their Nationals League semi-final against Switzerland, sparking retaliation from several drunken England fans who started hurling bottles.

Police confirmed they had acted after disturbances between England and Portugal fans.

A PSP spokesman said in the aftermath of a baton charge against around 200 England supporters: ‘There was an altercation between England supporters and some Portuguese, assaults occurred and the PSP was forced to intervene.

‘When the intervention occurred, the England fans turned on the police and two officers were injured.’

Last night’s trouble followed several minor incidents of anti-social behaviour on Monday and Tuesday as thousands of England fans arrived in Porto ahead of tonight’s Nations League semi-final against Holland in the nearby city of Guimaraes.

Schools have already been forced to close early in the area and several bars have said they will restrict outside drinking before the fans descend on the town.

Some England supporters have branded the police response heavy-handed, saying the charge happened in response to one beer being thrown in the air.

Two England fans are understood to have been hurt, with one suffering a minor head injury and another a cut hand.

The officers said to have been assaulted by the arrested supporters suffered only minor injuries according to the PSP spokesman.
