England rugby star Rob Webber had to pull over and be sick as he attempted to drive his Range Rover home after downing six pints in a boozy post-game session.

Webber, 31, ‘swerved’ off the M6 in Cheshire into a service station and was found passed out at the wheel, twice the drink-drive limit.

The Sale Sharks player, who has 16 international caps, was 14 miles into the 20-mile trip to his home in Altrincham, Greater Manchester, when he pulled into Knutsford Services.

Police later found the 6ft tall, 250lb hooker asleep in the car, Stockport Magistrates’ Court heard.

The married father was breathalysed and recorded 91mg, more than twice the legal limit of 35mg.

Webber, of Langham Road in Bowden, Greater Manchester, admitted drink-driving during a hearing on Tuesday.

The court heard that Webber was unable to do unpaid work or be subject to a curfew because his job takes him all over the world playing rugby.

Instead he was fined £1,833 with £285 court costs and banned from driving for 23 months.

Sentencing, Jill Hodges, chair of the bench of magistrates, said: ‘You are a professional sports player and should be setting an example to children and those who follow your club.

‘You had at least six pints and then drove. It its unacceptable behaviour.’

The court heard that Webber, a married father, had spent August 6 watching Sandbach Rugby Club, where he is a coach.

Tina Cunnane, prosecuting, said: ‘Witnesses saw him swerve into the services and open his door to be sick.

‘Webber told the police he had at least four or five pints after a rugby game in Sandbach.

‘He decided to drive home to Altrincham and went along the M6. He said he realised he was being stupid and came off the road. He was sick and changed his t-shirt before falling asleep. He was woken by police.’

Mark Halsam, defending Webber, who used to play for Bath and Wasps, described his ‘fundamentally flawed decision to drive’ as ‘a moment of madness’.

Mr Haslam said: ‘He stayed for a drink and arranged to stay over with one of the players but realised that would be unprofessional and inappropriate.

‘He has felt the wrath of his employers and had been fined significantly as part of the internal disciplinary process.’
