England vs France World Cup player ratings as Harry Kane misses penalty

England crashed out of the World Cup in heart-breaking circumstances as they lost 2-1 to France in the quarter-finals.

Harry Kane sent a late penalty over the crossbar when presented with the opportunity to force extra time, having earlier drawn England level at 1-1.

But Olivier Giroud headed home what proved to be the winner 12 minutes from time as the reigning champions progressed to face Morocco in the semi-finals.

GERRY COX rated every England and France player at the Al-Bayt Stadium.

ENGLAND RATINGS

JORDAN PICKFORD The Everton keeper had little chances with either goal. Made one easy save from Giroud’s close range header early on and a great one from a Rabiot long shot and then a Giroud volley. 7

KYLE WALKER Was always going to be under the spotlight, up against Mbappe, and was coping well until he got caught upfield when France broke away to open the scoring. Did not get forward as much as usual, mindful of Mbappe’s threat. 6.5

JOHN STONES Looked composed on the ball but was caught out when Giroud scored the winner in the 78th minute. His partnership with Maguire was looking good up to that moment. Went off injured in the closing stages. 6

HARRY MAGUIRE England’s renaissance man this tournament, showing he is back to his best winning headers in both penalty areas and good with the ball. Went close with a header in the 70th minute. 7

LUKE SHAW Did not get forward as much as usual in the first half, mindful of the speed of Dembele, and was caught out once or twice. Superb cross almost led to a goal on 70 minutes. 6

JORDAN HENDERSON Struggled to link effectively with Saka or Walker on the right. Caught in possession more than once and gave away cheap free-kicks by fouling Mbappe. One good shot blocked. 6

DECLAN RICE Overcame a bout of sickness to take his place in deep midfield and did his usual job of breaking up play and helping England keep the ball. Had his hands full with Griezmann but never stopped running. 6.5

Jude Bellingham suffered his first taste of England heartbreak but has performed brilliantly

JUDE BELLINGHAM England’s breakout star, the teenager started slowly but got more into the game after 20 minutes or so and started to give the French defence real problems with his runs and passes. One volley brilliantly saved by Lloris 7.5

BUKAYO SAKA Poor in the first half, getting caught in possession too often, but big improvement after the break and his driving run brought the penalty from which England equalised. 6.5

HARRY KANE The England captain will never live down the penalty miss that could have taken the game to extra time. Earlier equalled Wayne Rooney’s record of 53 goals with his equaliser from the penalty spot and could have had a hat-trick but for three saves by his Tottenham team-mate Hugo Lloris. 7

PHIL FODEN The Manchester City forward struggled out wide initially but became more influential when he started on his mazy dribbles infield and was unlucky not to score. Replaced by Rashford late on. 7

Raheem Sterling for Bukayo Saka 78mins Hardly involved when coming on as England chased a second equaliser 6

Marcus Rashford for Phil Foden 85mins One huge chance with a free-kick in stoppage time, but this time it went over rather than in 6.5

Jack Grealish for John Stones 90+4mins No time to make an impact.

FRANCE RATINGS

HUGO LLORIS Making his 143rd appearance for France, a new record, saved three times from his Tottenham team-mate Harry Kane but no chance with the first penalty. Great save to tip over a Bellingham volley too. 9

JULES KOUNDE The Barcelona full-back kept Phil Foden quiet to such an extent the Manchester City man started to come into a more central position in search of the ball. Tidy and efficient, although he was overrun when England got on top later. 7

DAYOT UPAMECANO Bayern Munich’s big defender was lucky not to concede a penalty after tripping Kane on the edge of the area. Robbed Saka to start the move for Tchouameni’s goal, but never looked comfortable. 6

RAPHAEL VARANE The Manchester United defender was composed on the ball for the first-half, but also struggled when England’s forwards ran at the French defence. Back to his best after injuries threatened his place at the World Cup. 7

THEO HERNANDEZ Came on to replace his injured brother early in France’s first game and has not looked back, but was booked for conceding a penalty when he barged Mason Mount in the back. 6

AURELIEN TCHOUAMENI Scored a cracker to break the deadlock in the 17th minute. When Griezmann laid the ball square, his powerful shot flew through Bellingham’s legs and past Pickford from 25 yards. But conceded England’s first penalty by fouling Saka. 7

ADRIEN RABIOT The Juventus midfielder put himself about well, took the ball off Henderson to set up a chance for Mbappe and then fired in a fierce long shot that Pickford did well to save. Never stopped running. 7

ANTOINE GRIEZMANN Has been a revelation in the number 10 role and was the best player on the pitch. Passed to Tchouameni for his goal, never stopped harrying, and his superb cross allowed Giroud to head the winner. Booked for a foul on Kane. 8

OUSMANE DEMBELE He has looked more like the exciting young winger Barcelona signed five years ago. Whipped in two early crosses that worried England and gave Giroud the first chance of the game. Faded as the game went on. 7

OLIVIER GIROUD France’s record goalscorer hit his fourth in four games, and by far the most Important, as he headed in France’s winner in the 78th minute. All time top scorer with 53 goals. Like vintage wine gets better as he gets older. 8

KYLIAN MBAPPE The dangerman, and no wonder, with five goals so far. Flitted in and out of the game in the first-half but created a buzz every time he got the ball. Put one volley high over the bar before half-time. 7.5
