England’s second Test against Pakistan was finally cleared to resume from 2.45pm on Saturday after the rain cleared at Headingley.

No play was possible before lunch as persistent drizzle kept the pitch under covers while ground staff worked on the outfield.

But after inspections at 1.50pm and then 2.20pm, Australian umpires Rod Tucker and Bruce Oxenford ruled the day’s action could finally begin.

England, needing a win to draw the two-Test series, were looking to build on a dominant first day which saw them reach 106 for two in reply to Pakistan’s 174.

Captain Joe Root was waiting to resume on 29, in partnership with scoreless nightwatchman Dom Bess, after openers Alastair Cook and Keaton Jennings made 46 and 29 respectively on Friday.

Stuart Broad, James Anderson and Chris Woakes had earlier taken three wickets apiece, with only Shadab Khan offering much resistance for Pakistan with a rapid tail-end half-century.

There were still a scheduled 59 overs left, with hours of play extended until 7.30pm if necessary and possible.

Tea was set to take place at 4.40pm.
