Tim Paine and Shaun Marsh’s sixth-wicket stand of 85 blunted England’s hopes on day two of the second Ashes Test at Adelaide.

The tourists began on a high when Stuart Broad had Peter Handscomb lbw with the third delivery after the resumption – but Paine especially, with a spirited and skillful 91-ball 50, put England on the back foot again.

The wicketkeeper fell for 57, caught mis-pulling Craig Overton, but Marsh stayed put in a teatime total of 306 for six.

England bowled much better than they had on Saturday yet were on the wrong end of a successful lbw review each by Marsh and Paine off James Anderson, on 29 and 24 respectively, as Australia threatened to post an above-par total.
