England’s Gareth Southgate ‘likes the USA as a future destination’

Gareth Southgate ‘likes the USA as a future destination’ with the England manager weighing up his options after World Cup exit to France – amid uncertainty over Gregg Berhalter’s USMNT job

England coach Gareth Southgate reportedly likes the United States as a possible landing spot.

The 52-year-old revealed he will not rush into a decision on his future as Three Lions manager following their disappointing World Cup quarterfinal defeat by France on Saturday.

Speculation over Southgate’s position is swirling after losing 2-1 at the last-eight stage in Qatar following European Championship heartbreak last year.

Appearing on a Men in Blazers live podcast in San Francisco, television anchor Rebecca Lowe discussed the potential of Southgate moving to America.

‘I’ve heard all sorts of thoughts about apparently he does quite like the United States as a next destination, whether that be Major League Soccer or USA.’

Southgate’s current deal with the England national team does not expire until the summer of 2024 but he will assess his options in the coming weeks.

‘Whenever I’ve finished these tournaments I’ve needed time to make correct decisions because emotionally you go through so many different feelings. The energy it takes through these tournaments is enormous,’ he said after the loss.

‘I want to make the right decision, whenever that is, for the team, for England, for the FA and I’ve got to be sure whatever the decision I take is the right one and I think it’s right to take time to do that because I know in the past how my feelings have fluctuated immediately after tournaments.’

USMNT boss Gregg Berhalter refused to be drawn on his future following the USA’s last-16 exit to Holland last week.

His contract ran through to the end of the World Cup this winter but like Southgate he did not want to make a snap decision.

‘I’ve only been focused on the World Cup, achieving things with this group,’ he said.

‘In the next couple of weeks, I’ll clear my head and think about what’s next.’
