Erik ten Hag ‘will earn a new contract at Manchester United regardless of the club’s owner’

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag will reportedly earn a new contract regardless of who becomes the new club owner.

Talks of a potential takeover at the club have been ongoing for months and have had significant developments this week as both Sir Jim Ratcliffe and a high-level team of representatives of Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani toured Old Trafford.

The club’s current owners, the Glazer family, have ensured that they remain focused on a delivering a positive outcome this season and will not let the takeover talks distract them. 

As part of this, one issue that has already been outlined is the desire to extend ten Hag’s deal as head coach of the Red Devils. 

And, according to the Mirror, both bidding parties are on-board with the idea of offering the Dutch manager a contract renewal, despite him only signing a three-year deal in summer.

Ten Hag has helped transform the Red Devils in his first season at the club and has delivered a Carabao Cup trophy whilst maintaining a position in the top four. 

Because of this, there is a sense of urgency around the club to provide him with a new and even longer contract to ensure he commits his future at United. 

Ten Hag revealed, earlier this week, that he met Sir Jim Ratcliffe ahead of the Brit’s potential takeover of Manchester United.

The UK’s richest man was pictured at Old Trafford after touching down in the City to discuss his potential takeover with club officials as he rivals a group of Qatari bidders – led by Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani – who gave their presentation on Thursday. 

The 70-year-old was later seen beaming outside United’s famous ground after initial talks inside as he prepared to make his way to Carrington. 

Ten Hag, speaking on Friday before United’s FA Cup clash with Fulham, revealed that he met the billionaire during his visit to the club.

‘I just met them and shook hands but I am focused on the game,’ the Dutchman said. ‘We play a big game on Sunday and all our focus is on that. Others in the club are dealing with potential investors.’

‘My job is focus on the game so let’s talk about the game Fulham, it is a big tie so let’s get ready for that.’

Meanwhile, a high-level team of representatives of Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani toured Old Trafford before being sitting down for presentations at United’s Carrington training complex on Thursday afternoon.

Sheikh Jassim was not present for the talks, which concluded at around 7.20pm. United manager Erik ten Hag was in Seville, where his side defeated Real Betis 1-0 in the second leg of their Europa League tie to progress 5-1 on aggregate. 

It is understood that the talks – which lasted around 10 hours – were cordial, extensive and very positive. Sheikh Jassim now has around 10 days to make a second bid as he seeks total control of United. 

It remains unclear whether the Raine Group, the US bank overseeing the process, will then choose a party to go exclusive with or seek further rounds of offers.
