Erin Emilia Rain Tomkins dies of ‘non-accidental’ injuries as teen charged of murder

  • The little girl was taken to hospital in ambulance on Monday and died Tuesday
  • Injuries are ‘suspected to be non-accidental’ and death caused by head wounds

A teenager has been charged with the murder of a 22-month-old toddler who was taken to hospital with ‘non-accidental’ head injuries.

Erin Emilia Rain Tomkins died just after 12.30am on Tuesday in Sheffield Children’s Hospital after she was found at a flat in Gleadless about 11.40am on Monday.

Police described he wounds as ‘suspected non-accidental injuries’ and a post-mortem later revealed her cause of death to be severe head injuries.

Martin Johnson was arrested on Monday and will face Sheffield Magistrates’ Court on Friday charged with murder, remaining behind bars until then. 

‘My thoughts are with the family at this incredibly traumatic and difficult time,’ Detective Chief Inspector Steve Whittaker of South Yorkshire Police said.

‘I understand Erin’s death is highly emotive and people will naturally feel saddened at the tragic loss of such a young life.’

Mr Whittaker also urged social media users to refrain from posting ‘speculative’ comments.
