Ethan Mbappe was forced to miss a showdown with superstar brother Kylian in the Champions League, but the Lille midfielder made the most of their shock win over Real Madrid by leading the dressing room celebrations.

The 17-year-old had been ruled out of Lille’s second league phase match of the new new look Champions League through injury.

He admitted ahead of the match that it was his ‘dream’ to face his brother in Europe’s elite competition, one that has been temporarily dashed by a quadriceps injury.

‘Even though I’m not on the field for a while, I’ll continue to support my team and work hard behind the scenes,’ he wrote in a message to fans.

‘My dream of meeting my brother in the Champions League is getting far but not disappearing… Thank you all for your messages of support, it gives me the strength to get through this time. I can’t wait to come back and meet you all on the field. Let’s go, Lille.’

Ethan lived up to his promise to support the team on the sidelines, as Lille earned a shock 1-0 win over the defending champions.

Jonathan David scored from the penalty spot in first half stoppage time, after Eduardo Camavinga had blocked Edon Zhegrova’s free-kick with his arm.

Real Madrid called up their star summer signing Kylian Mbappe in the second half in a bid to rescue the match.

The forward had been expected to be injured until after the international break after suffering a thigh problem.

He made a quick return as a 57th minute substitute at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy but was unable to help Real Madrid force an equaliser.

Lille were able to hold on to hand Real Madrid a first defeat in the Champions League since May 2023, as well as a first loss in any competition since January.
