An Etihad Airways flight attendant has spilled her beauty secrets to always looking immaculate at 35,000 feet – no matter the distance, jet lag or dry cabin air.

Emma, a cabin senior from Melbourne, has been working for the national airline of the United Arab Emirates for five-and-a-half years.

So it’s no surprise the seasoned traveller knows a thing or two about keeping her skin hydrated in the sky – whether it’s a short trip or a long-haul flight.

The 30-year-old always packs her essential makeup and skincare products in her carry-on bag to ensure she stays fresh throughout the flight, no matter the time of day or night.

‘I always keep a few essentials in my carry-on like a hydrating face serum and mist, and a lip balm close by,’ Emma told FEMAIL.

‘My other essentials include hand cream, cuticle oil and a good moisturiser to keep my skin feeling nourished and hydrated.

‘I also drink plenty of water during flights to stay hydrated and avoid dry skin, and will apply quick makeup touch-ups to keep myself looking and feeling fresh.’

Before every flight, the air hostess prepares herself for the long journey ahead.

‘In the lead up I’ll ensure I’m consuming extra water to stay well hydrated, and make a conscious effort to get enough sleep and rest in before my duty so I have all the energy I need,’ she said.

‘Once my essentials are all packed, I also like to stretch before my duty as this helps to avoid any muscle stiffness.’

When she’s working long-haul flights, the cabin crew sticks to a rigorous skincare routine on board.

‘For me when flying, it’s all about hydration and protection. I’ll usually begin with a gentle cleanser to clean my face and prepare it for my next steps, followed by a hydrating serum or facial mist to lock in moisture,’ she said.

‘For my under-eyes, I use a multi-peptide eye serum and then go in with a rich moisturiser to ensure my skin remains nourished throughout the flight.

‘SPF is also an essential for daytime flights. Lastly for the face, I use a rose quartz roller to reduce any puffiness and boost circulation – helping the skin to look refreshed and energised.

‘And finally, I’ll go in with a hand cream and cuticle oil to prevent dryness. It’s all about maintaining a healthy glow.’

During the flight, Emma typically sprays a hydrating mist on her face every few hours to keep her skin refreshed, and reapplies a thick moisturiser where needed – a must for long-haul flights to ‘lock in the moisture’.

Emma’s top tips for preventing puffiness, dark circles or dry skin

  1. Drink plenty of water throughout the flight (I find hydrated skin is less prone to puffiness and dryness)
  2. Use a hydrating mist and re-apply every few hours for a radiant glow
  3. Try a multi-peptide eye serum to brighten the under-eye area
  4. Keep your lip balm close to prevent chapped dry lips
  5. Take your time trying out a rose quartz roller to boost circulation and for an energised look

She said the one beauty tip she swears by is using an overnight sleeping mask.

‘To maintain hydrated skin on board apply an overnight/sleeping mask throughout your journey. This acts as a moisture barrier to prevent your skin from drying out, so I’d recommend always applying your face mask after your skincare routine,’ she said.

‘Not only does it help with hydration, but also locks in the nutrients from your products, leaving skin super fresh by the time you land.’

To nod off faster during long-haul flights, Emma said she finds that wearing an eye mask helps her ‘settle in quicker’ and fall asleep more easily as it ‘aids in blocking out any light’.

‘I also like to practice deep breathing or meditation to help relax the body and mind and create a peaceful environment that makes it easier to fall asleep naturally,’ she said.

Emma found herself working in the airline industry more than five years ago.

‘My time as an attendant has been such an exciting journey – whether it’s discovering new destinations, meeting new people, or helping passengers have a comfortable flight,’ she said.

‘When I’m not flying, I love to cook nutritious meals, attend the gym or Pilates classes, or spend my time outdoors.’

‘Etihad’s new BeRelax spa offers such a unique and convenient way to unwind, especially for travellers passing through,’ Emma said.

‘To me, what really stands out is the flexibility of the services that can be tailored to align with any traveller’s schedule.

‘My favourite service at the Etihad spa is the signature chair massages as they’re perfect for relieving tension, especially during long journeys.
