Mae Muller has opened up on starring in Mika’s Grace Kelly music video when she was just nine years old, after being unveiled as the UK’s entry for the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest.
The singer, 25, is set to fly the flag for her home nation with her own track I Wrote A Song, at the live final in Liverpool in May.
Mae sat down with Scott Mills for a special interview that aired on BBC One ahead of The Apprentice on Thursday.
She recalled starring in the music video for Mika when she was nine, saying: ‘I’m the girl in the green dress, I still have the green dress.
She even remembered the words she said in the video, saying: ‘It was already my favourite song.’

Discussing Eurovision, she said: ‘I said yes straight away. I don’t think it’s get much bigger than Eurovision.’
Talking about last year’s entrant Sam Ryder, Mae said: ‘I just love Sam. He did the best job and I think he really put us in a whole new light.’
She added: ‘I definitely want to carry it on.’
She described her music as ’empowering, sometimes a bit tongue and cheek but always coming back to the same thing, knowing what you’re worth.’
Speaking on what her song for this year’s competition is about, Mae said: ‘After you go through a breakup, a relationship or a friendship, its easy to want revenge.
‘I thought how can I turn a negative feeling into a positive.’
She added: ‘We’re working on it every day, vocal training, choreo, it’s gotta be big.’
Discussing her beginnings, Mae recalled: ‘I was working at the pub in the day and writing in the evening ang through that I started to release music.
‘I was not a good barmaid, I can pull a good pint but was rubbish at everything else.’
Mae gushed that while touring with Little Mix she was tasked with ‘trying to win over’ vast crowds who were waiting for the iconic girlband to perform.
Mae was one of Little Mix’s opening acts during their LM5 tour in 2019, telling Scott: ‘I went from doing shows of 300 people to 20,000, so I kind of have to go out there every night and win over 20,000 people.’
The singer, who kickstarted her music career by uploading demos on Soundcloud, adds: ‘They were like ”we’re here for LM who are you?” but it was really amazing.’
Scott notes that during the tour Mae performed at Liverpool Arena, where the Eurovision final is set to take place.
Mae then adds: ‘Can I just tell you, I’m sure you already know.
‘The Liverpudlins know how to have a good time, they just gave me the best energy.’
Mae also introduced the first full play of the official music video for her Eurovision entry I Wrote A Song, following its release earlier in the day.
Mae was unveiled as the UK’s entry for this year’s Eurovision on Zoe Ball’s BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show.
She gushed: ‘Oh my God, I have been waiting to say that for months. I am shaking. That has been on my lips and in the brain and in the soul and on the nails.’

Mae added that she’s already been getting tips from Eurovision’s last UK entry Sam Ryder, who finished in a shock second place behind winners Ukraine, the best British result in years.
She said: ‘We spoke yesterday he sent me some voice notes, just the loveliest man in the world, he’s given me some tips as well.’
Mae will take to the stage at the live final in Liverpool on May 13 with her track I Wrote A Song.
It was previously revealed by The Daily Mail that Mae was chosen by music industry experts in the hope that she will follow last year’s UK star Sam Ryder to success when he came runner up to the Ukrainian competitor with his hit SPACE MAN.
Sources say that the decision to choose Mae was taken in recent days and they are confident she will win ‘far more’ than nil points when she takes to the stage in Liverpool in May.
One said: ‘Mae is an extraordinary talent and there is little doubt that she will do the country proud and hopefully replicate the success and euphoria that Sam brought to last year’s competition.
‘A lot of time and effort has gone into picking the best singer for the job, she might not be a household name yet and of course the people who selected her are expecting people to ask who she is but they think the nation will love her, as will those across Europe.’
The competition is being held in the UK for the first time in 25 years.
While Mae will be unknown to most, she supported popular girl group Little Mix on their 2019 tour and appeared in a music video for popstar Mika’s hit Grace Kelly in 2007 when she was just ten-years-old.
She also attended the £27,000-per-year Fine Arts college in Hampstead, North London, with the likes of Brooklyn Beckham and Madonna and Guy Ritchie’s son Rocco.

Mae began writing her own songs at the age of eight before leaving college and getting a job in a clothes shop American Apparel.
She later went to work in a pub in Kentish Town, North London, so that she could concentrate on her music during the daytime.
She admitted recently that her musical inspirations are Gwen Stefani, Florence and the Machine and Lily Allen.
Mae also revealed that she first became interested in music when her mother played the Dixie Chicks’ album, Home.
