The veteran hasn’t fought since 2011, when he knocked out Brian Nielsen, but he is stepping up efforts to return to the ring for an exhibition match – which would see him follow former opponent Mike Tyson, 54, and Roy Jones Jr, 51, who agreed to fight earlier this summer.

This week Holyfield also uploaded a clip of him shadow boxing inside the ring, but had fans concerned about getting back into the sport after he showed a slower hand speed. He wrote: ‘Morning training. Sitting at 215lbs right where I want to be.’

He has also teased boxing fans with videos of him being worked hard with battle ropes, skipping and strength exercises led by ex-heavyweight king Wladimir Klitschko.

Holyfield has been sizing up a trilogy fight with Tyson but believes his deal to fight Jones Jr may wreck the possibility of it happening.

‘Mike may have wanted another exhibition before fighting me. By him doing this, it may mess up a future one [against me].

‘We’d talked about it, but there was nothing solid on paper. We knew we wanted to do it first.

‘When you do it second, people are going to judge how the first one is.
