Their card was marked! Eagle-eyed Reddit user spots infamous murderers the Menendez brothers in background of ex-Knicks star Mark Jackson’s basketball card (after they killed their parents and just before their arrest)
- A viral tweet showed a Mark Jackson 1990-91 Hoops card may feature the two murderers at a Knicks game
- Jose and Kitty Menendez were murdered by the brothers in August of 1989
- Lyle and Erik Menendez would not be arrested until March of 1990
- Reports place the shot during the New York Knicks’ season between those dates
- The new burst of notoriety has pushed the bidding price for the card on eBay
A former Knicks point guard’s baseball card appears to feature a pair of siblings notorious for the high-profile murder of their parents in Beverly Hills, California.
Mark Jackson’s Hoops card, from the 1990-91 season, has gone viral after a social media user spotted the infamous Menendez brothers sitting courtside in the photo.
‘Reddit is mostly bad but the other day I learned on that website that the Menendez Brothers are in the background of this basketball card,’ tweeted John Rosenberger.
‘Logistically this would be between when they killed their parents and when they were arrested and I cannot stop thinking about it.’
The 1990-1991 season Hoops card for Mark Jackson depicts a shot taken at a game sometime in the previous season. The circled men are thought to be Lyle and Erik Menendez
Lyle Menendez (left) and Erik Menendez (right) murdered their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez on August 20, 1989. They would be convicted of the crime in 1996
The photo used in the card may very well correspond with the time between when the murders took place and the arrest of the two brothers as Jackson sported the knee brace during the 1989-1990 season, Beckett, a collectibles publication, reported.
Jose and Kitty Menendez were killed in the den of their homes by the Lyle and Erik carrying shotguns on August 20, 1989, but the brothers would not be arrested until March of the following year.
Mark Jackson played for the Knicks from 1987-1991 and again from 2000-2002
Beckett does point out that while the resemblance is striking, without a confirmation from the siblings themselves, it would be difficult to be absolutely certain the murderous pair were in attendance at Madison Square Garden in 1989.
The possibility that the notorious murderers are pictured, however, is raising the value of the macabre memorabilia on eBay, from what would normally be pennies to bids as high as $35.
Lyle and Erik Menendez would go on to be tried in a heavily sensationalized trial in 1993, covered extensively on Court TV, where they would claim sexual abuse as a defense. The cases against both men would end in deadlocked juries.
Eventually, they would be convicted in a retrial in 1996, and are currently serving life sentences without the possibility of parole.
Mark Jackson was a popular player in his first five seasons with the New York Knicks, especially as a member of the three-point shooting ‘Bomb Squad’ team in 1988, and he would play seven seasons total with the team. The point guard also played 10 other seasons with six teams before coaching for several years in the NBA as well.
The Menendez brothers’ trial was covered extensively on Court TV and was among the highest profile criminal proceedings of the day
