Ex-Scotland Yard commander slams Surrey force for jokingly suggesting on Twitter that Harry and Meghan should become COPS
- Surrey Police say jobs would be perfectly located between Sussex and Frogmore
- They claimed roles would make sure they could ‘still serve the Queen’
- But ex-Met Police commander Chris Greany branded post ‘distasteful’
A former Scotland Yard commander has slammed a police force for suggesting Harry and Meghan should become officers.
Surrey Police claimed the jobs would be perfect for the royal couple as they would still be able to ‘serve the Queen’ as stated in their shock announcement last week.
They would also be conveniently located between their home at Frogmore Cottage in Berkshire and their title county of Sussex.
Surrey Police’s tweet included a link to their careers page which includes job vacancies for officers, PCSOs and Fast Track Detective Constables.
It was signed off with emojis of a prince and princess and an arrow pointing towards a PC and a WPC.
But former Metropolitan Police officer Chris Greany suggested the post was ‘distasteful’.

The tweet reads: ‘Dear #HarryAndMeghan, We hear you are looking for a new role where your strong beliefs in public service, and serving the @Queen-UK could be an asset?
‘We’re close to Windsor, and Sussex, and we are recruiting* https://surrey.police.uk/police-forces/surrey-police/areas/careers/careers/* £Megxit’
But Former Met Police commander Chris Greany said: ‘I’m not sure this tweet is very tasteful folks’
Retired public sector worker Ian Bishop, of Bromborough, Wirral, said: ‘Not even funny!! Whoever controls this site needs a slap !!
‘Ffs leave them alone. You saw what the media did to his mum!!’
The tweeted caused a backlash on Twitter, with some demanding it be removed and others praising the ‘British sense of humour’
Jason Davis, of Syston, Leicstershire, tweeted: ‘Whoever is using @SurreyPolice login and posted this should be removed from post and sacked.
‘Very distasteful and not at all the kind of tweets the public expect regarding the royal family. @SurreyPCC sort it out.’
Another Twitter user – called Caz – added: ‘Whoever runs your PR department reassign them! Appalling tweet.’
Yet Rob Howland, of West London said: ‘My respect for the police just shot up.’
Jules, of Newcastle – said: ‘Got to love our British sense of humour.’
One user – called This Glorious Land – said: ‘Whoever thought this up deserves a raise. Well done @SurreyPolice.’
Surrey Police defended their controversial Harry and Meghan tweet.
A force spokesman said: ‘We used one of the biggest news stories of the day to get across our recruitment message in a very competitive market.
‘While it might not have been to everyone’s taste, to date it has resulted in more than 600 visits to the recruitment pages of our website.
‘We always aim to be innovative on our social media channels and take on board any comments both positive and negative.’
