Ex-Newcastle duo shock fans with unrecognisable photo at Euro 2024 as former St James’ Park legends are spotted by supporters

Newcastle fans were astonished after seeing two of their former players looking unrecognisable while on punditry duties at Euro 2024.

Plenty of celebrities have popped up at various grounds around Germany during the ongoing European Championship and Magpies supporters had a keen eye on two former players on Sunday.

Two ex-colleagues that previously starred under Kevin Keegan at St James’ Park came together for a pre-match photo at the Stuttgart Arena that has shocked fans.

Scotland’s final Group A match against Hungary ended in defeat for Steve Clarke’s side as they crashed out of Euro 2024 after being beaten 1-0.

Former Newcastle duo Warren Barton and Phillipe Albert were in attendance and shared an update all those years later and looked delighted to catch-up pre-match before the Scotland game.

Posting the picture on X while working at the game for American broadcaster Fox Sports, Barton wrote: ‘So happy to see my friend @NUFC Philippe Albert @EURO2024’ alongside a heart emoji.

Newcastle fans were quick to comment on the photo, with one post on X stating: ‘Philippe Albert is still my favourite Newcastle player! I was there for the Schmeichel chip and had ‘27’ on the back of my shirt as a kid.’ 

Another Magpies supporter similarly added: ‘Two legends of our time.’ 

55-year-old Barton made an astonishing 219 appearances for Newcastle between 1995 and 2002, starring in Newcastle’s team that finished as Premier League runners-up.

Albert moved to England’s north-east in 1994, featuring in the same Toon squad, and later leaving after losing the FA Cup final before the turn of the Millenium.

The Belgian made 96 appearances for Newcastle during his time at the club and scored eight goals in the process.
