Ex-NFL star Kellen Winslow Jr’s wife files for divorce after his rape conviction

Kellen Winslow Jr’s wife of 13 years has moved to divorce the ex-NFL star three months after he was convicted of raping a 58-year-old homeless woman and pleasuring himself in front of a 77-year-old woman.

Janelle Winslow filed a petition for divorce in San Diego County Superior Court on August 30, TMZ reported Monday.

The couple have been married since 2006 and share an eight-year-old son and five-year-old daughter, but it appears their relationship could not withstand the disturbing allegations laid bare at Winslow Jr’s trial in June.

The former tight end for the Cleveland Browns was found guilty of forcible rape for the May incident with the homeless woman, along with two counts of lewd conduct involving two other women.

He was also found guilty of indecent exposure to another woman and lewd conduct regarding a third accuser.

Janelle’s divorce filing came one month ahead of her estranged husband’s retrial on eight other charges the jury was deadlocked on, which is set to start on September 30.

If convicted of all eight remaining charges, Winslow Jr faces up to life in prison.

The 35-year-old athlete has denied all the allegations against him – insisting that he’s ‘an innocent man’ and the victim of a money grab.

Winslow Jr is currently jailed after the judge denied his request to be released on $1million bail and home confinement.

Three days after Winslow Jr’s conviction, Sports Illustrated published an explosive piece detailing his alleged history of inappropriate sexual behavior, including watching pornographic videos during team meetings, masturbating in shared hotel rooms and traveling with an anatomically accurate woman’s torso fashioned out of silicone.

Citing interviews with two anonymous teammates and three unnamed former team officials from his NFL days, the report claimed that Winslow Jr often bragged about cheating on his wife and enjoying one-night-stands in different cities.

Winslow Jr was initially arrested in 2018 after authorities said they found ties to him and two alleged break-ins at the home of a 71-year-old woman on June 1 and an 86-year-old woman on June 7 in the Pacific beach town of Encinitas, north of San Diego.

After posting bail, he was arrested again on the additional charges of raping two women, a 54-year-old female hitchhiker in March of 2018 and a 58-year-old homeless female in May of 2018. Both women were attacked in Encinitas. He was accused of kidnapping the 54-year-old.

Also in May of 2018, a 57-year-old woman accused Winslow Jr of exposing himself to her. Another woman stepped forward to say she had been attacked by him when she was 17, according to the investigation.

While Winslow Jr was out on $2million bail, he was arrested for lewd conduct in front of a 77-year-old woman at a gym on two separate occasions in February of this year.

The son and namesake of the Chargers tight end and Pro Football Hall of Famer, Winslow Jr grew up in San Diego before attending the University of Miami and getting drafted sixth overall by the Cleveland Browns in the 2004 NFL Draft.

He played 10 seasons for five teams, including the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Jets, and had his best year in 2007 when he finished with 1,106 receiving yards and was named to the AFC Pro Bowl team.

In 2005, Winslow Jr famously suffered a severe leg injury while riding a motorcycle in an empty parking lot outside of Cleveland. He sustained torn ligaments in his right knee and was placed on the Physically Unable-to-Perform list.

Winslow Jr was charged with drug possession in 2014 after a woman called police because she believed he was masturbating in his car, which was parked outside a Target in East Hanover, New Jersey. He was eventually given a conditional discharge after being accused of having synthetic marijuana.

The bombshell Sports Illustrated report from June described his alleged obsession with sex in vivid detail, revealing how he became notorious for watching copious amounts of pornography in socially inappropriate situations and compulsively masturbating.

‘He could count on having an empty seat next to him on any team flight, due to his ritual of watching hardcore pornography on his portable DVD player,’ the article stated, citing Winslow Jr’s former teammates and officials.

On one occasion, as recounted by the magazine, a Browns team staffer went out looking for Winslow Jr and allegedly found him masturbating in the backseat of his parked Hummer.

On another, an equipment manager was bringing gear into the team locker room when he walked in on Winslow Jr pleasuring himself near the entrance, according to two team officials.

During away games, no one on the team wanted to share hotel accommodations with the tight end because it was widely known that he was in the habit of watching porn and masturbating without any regard for who was in the room with him.

In the early days of smartphones, Winslow Jr allegedly took to watching adult content on his device during meetings, it was reported.

Romeo Crennel, his former head coach with Cleveland, and former Browns assistant Terry Robiskie made efforts to correct Winslow Jr’s behavior and impress upon him that his conduct was beyond the pale, but to no avail.

After Winslow Jr was traded to Tampa Bay, he reportedly bought a life-size silicone mold of a woman’s torso equipped with vagina and anus, which he would take on the road with him.

One team official painted a portrait of Winslow Jr as being ‘infantile’ and preoccupied with ‘video games and f***ing.’

All five of Winslow Jr’s accusers testified during his nine-day rape trial, which concluded on Monday. Winslow Jr did not take the stand.

Defense attorneys pointed out inconsistencies in the accusers’ testimonies and argued the women invented the allegations to prey on the wealth of Winslow Jr, who earned $43million playing football.

Prosecutors said the son of Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow Jr felt empowered by his fame to abuse the most vulnerable and called him a ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing.’

Defense attorney Marc Carlos questioned the credibility of the women’s claims, saying they had lied, misconstrued things or were unable to initially identify him correctly.

Defense lawyers also said the sex was consensual and that Winslow Jr had cheated on his wife repeatedly with no-strings-attached sex.

Prosecutors said the crux of the women’s stories didn’t change and that evidence included traces of Winslow Jr’s DNA on one of the accuser’s pants and GPS locations placing him where the women said the assaults occurred.
