Example CANCELS gig after son, 2, perforates his eardrum by ‘shoving a cotton bud’ into it

Example has cancelled a gig, last-minute, after his two-year-old son Ennio perforated his eardrum.

The toddler – whom Example [real name Elliot Gleaves] shares with his Australian model wife Erin McNaught – crept up on his father while he was sleeping and inserted a cotton bud into his ear, causing severe bleeding.

On further inspection it was found that Ennio had perforated the drum, meaning Example had to pull out of his appearance at Magnitude Festival at Airlie Beach in Queensland on Sunday night.

He wrote on Twitter: ‘Any advice on perforated eardrums? Has anyone had this before? My youngest woke me up today by shoving a cotton bud down my left ear. It’s been bleeding on and off for about an hour.’

He later posted: ‘Gig is cancelled I’m afraid due to a burst eardrum.’

This left fans disappointed, but many sent the musician well-wishes for a speedy recovery and a restful New Year’s celebrations with his family.

Example and Erin are also parents to Evander Maxwell, five, who was born in December 2014.

The couple experienced heartache prior to the birth of Ennio when Erin suffered a miscarriage in 2016.

Example admitted how hard it had been for him on ITV’s Lorraine, which Erin later told Daily Mail Australia: ‘It’s something that we had never really discussed and that made me feel terrible. I realised I never really said to him, “How do you feel?”‘

The singer explained on Lorraine that he ‘didn’t know how to talk’ about his loss and struggled to cope after his wife’s miscarriage and also encouraged other men to speak out about their own mental health struggles.

Erin said: ‘He mentioned to me that the show’s producer had asked him if he would be okay to talk about it and, of course, I was like, “Yeah, that’s amazing that you’re willing to go on a huge national show and talk about it.”

‘Most men would feel like they didn’t have the right to, or they didn’t feel comfortable doing so.’

‘I think it was an amazing thing for him to go on and talk about it so candidly, because it is something that gets overlooked. The man often does get overlooked, unfortunately.

‘He conveyed his feelings and emotions so clearly on the show. We are not the sort of people who dwell on things, once we had spoken about it, it was almost like closure for us.’

Example told Lorraine Kelly: ‘It’s that old-fashioned ideal that men should be tougher and not show their emotions and it’s what leads us down the path of male suicide.

‘I didn’t know how to talk about it, no-one in my family had lost one. You realise it’s just about opening up, you just want to put all your time and effort into your missus.

‘It really is about speaking to everybody about it, it’s so common. Whether the couple’s together or not, it’s important to reach out.’

Example and Erin tied the knot in Australia in May 2013. Erin first shared news of her miscarriage during an interview on Chanel Seven’s The Morning Show in late 2016.

When the presenters, Kylie Gillies and Larry Emdur, asked if Erin was hoping for more children, they were surprised by her response.

‘I sadly had a miscarriage last month, which is… we’re totally fine, it’s just one of those things that’s unfortunately really, really common,’ she said. ‘For me, I found solace in knowing how common it was [miscarrying], because once I got talking, you realise just how many people are affected by it.

‘If I could find solace in that and I think if more people spoke about it, then it might not be as tough for people to go through it.’
