EXCLUSIVE: How one very lucky Aussie punter won more than $170,000 from a footy bet worth just $15

An Australian gambler has recorded the moment he discovered he’d won more than $170,000 after outlaying just $15 on an extremely complex bet.

The unnamed sports fan put together a 50-leg multi with Sportsbet and picked all 50 of his selections correctly to earn a total of $170,330.95.

It’s unknown exactly which outcomes he bet on in which sports, but the video shows he was sweating on one final selection to come good before the money was paid to him.

The punter receives a phone call from a friend in the footage, and when he’s asked if he has officially won the bet he says he’s waiting on a crucial statistic from Richmond’s round 24 match against Port Adelaide to go his way.

‘Earlier it had Tim Taranto 19 disposals so it [the Sportsbet app] said I’d lost but now if you go on the AFL app it’s changed to 20, and that’s all I need,’ he explains to the caller.

Seconds later Sportsbet makes it official that he’s won the wager as he and the mates he’s with shout and let fly with a few choice profanities.  

A quick check shows the AFL did credit Richmond’s Taranto with the 20 disposals as the Tigers lost to the Power 13.16 (94) to 8.15 (63).

According to Sportsbet, the multi consisted of nine same-game multis in which he tipped players to get 20-plus or 25-plus disposals.

The wager broke down as follows: Essendon v Collingwood – seven legs, $6.40; Hawks v Dockers – six legs, $2.87; North Melbourne v Gold Coast – five legs, $2.10; Brisbane v St Kilda – four legs, $2.25; Geelong v Bulldogs – seven legs, $4.44; West Coast v Adelaide – five legs, $2.25; Port v Richmond – four legs, $2.42; Sydney v Melbourne – six legs, $2.46; Carlton v GWS – six legs, $2.20.

The stunning result sits at the opposite end of the scale from another punter’s brutal experience with a multi last year.

That gambler put together a 15-leg multi last June and picked the first 14 selections correctly, including a multi-within-a-multi selection based on how NBA star Jayson Tatum and the Boston Celtics would perform, along with picking Collingwood to upset the Melbourne Demons.

Had the entire bet come off, the gambler stood to win almost $1million from their $5 wager.

Some of the other selections included the North Queensland Cowboys to smash the St George Illawarra Dragons by 13 or more points in the NRL and for Carlton to crush Essendon in the AFL by 25 points or more.

It all came down to Parramatta beating the Bulldogs by 13 or more points in their round 14 clash, which most would have considered to be one of the safest legs in the multi.

Prior to that game, the Bulldogs had scored just 29 tries in 13 matches and averaged just 2.2 tries a match. In contrast, the Eels had scored 52 tries at an average of four per match. 

All the ingredients were there for a Parramatta side looking to crack into the NRL top four to flog the struggling Bulldogs. However, the boys from Belmore had other ideas and smashed the Eels 34-4 in one of the biggest upsets of the season.
