Mysterious ‘explosion’ is heard in DC that shakes windows and doors and is compared to an ‘earthquake’ online: Department of Homeland Security says ‘there is no threat’

Dozens of people reported hearing a loud ‘explosion’ in the Washington D.C. area that shook houses and caused panic – though officials have not provided the cause of the loud bang.

Around 3:30 pm Sunday, social media users reported hearing a huge ‘bang’ in the city, with some saying it shook their homes.

That led to a flood of social media posts and speculation on the source, though none of it has been confirmed. Some suspected a sonic boom from a military drill nearby, while others suggested an earthquake.

Multiple agencies have received calls about the mysterious loud noise, which was heard as far as away as Annapolis, Maryland.

Police are said to be calling the Federal Aviation Administration and others for more information.

The Department of Homeland Security said there is no threat at this time, but no cause was given.
