Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg phoned Trump to congratulate him on his election victory

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg placed a congratulatory call to Donald Trump following his election victory, it was revealed a year and a half after the fact.

In the call, Zuckerberg congratulated Trump on his successful campaign and electoral win, BuzzFeed reported. 

The Trump campaign had made ample use of Facebook as an advertising platform, working with staff as it sought to target potential voters in swing areas of battleground states.

Company internal presentations referred to the Trump campaign as an ‘innovator,’ according to the report. 

Zuckerberg has apologized for the way Facebook got exploited for fake posts during the campaign.

Russian trolls targeted the platform to spread divisive messages, including stoking racial controversies and going after rival Hillary Clinton.

The internal memos indicate Facebook used what it learned from the Trump camp’s use of the platform to pitch other business. 

 ‘While we offer insights into how our products work and provide technical support, campaigns make their own decisions about how to use our tools,’ Katie Harbath, Facebook’s global politics and government outreach director, said in a statement to BuzzFeed News.

 ‘Their team showered tons of praise on our team’ said a former Trump staffer, according to the report.
