Famed California research center settles 2 gender bias suits

SAN DIEGO (AP) – The Salk Institute for Biological Studies in Southern California has settled two of three gender discrimination lawsuits filed by top female scientists.

The renowned research center and two former plaintiffs, Kathy Jones and Vicki Lundblad, said in a statement Tuesday that they’ve agreed to “put our disagreements behind” and “move forward together.” The terms weren’t disclosed.

Lundblad and Jones are faculty members and alleged last year that they and others were subjected to long-term discrimination.

The statement doesn’t mention the third plaintiff, Beverly Emerson, and the institute had no comment on her lawsuit.

Earlier this year, a male biologist resigned following allegations that he sexually harassed at least eight women over three decades.

The scientific research center was founded by Jonas Salk, who developed the world’s first effective and safe vaccine against polio.
