Families are forced to flee their homes as explosives are found in Sydney

  • A live explosive was found in an inner city Sydney suburb on Friday afternoon 
  • Police called to Reina Street, Bondi property and an exclusion zone established 
  • Mortar was transported to nearby golf club in Rose Bay and safely detonated 

Families in an inner city Sydney suburb were forced to flee their houses on Friday afternoon after a live explosive was found. 

An active mortar round was found in the suburb of North Bondi with police being called and a 300m exclusion zone established around the property. 

The grenade was then transported to a nearby golf club where a trench was dug, sandbags packed on top of the device, and it was detonated just before 6pm.

An active mortar round was found in the suburb of North Bondi with police being called and a 300m exclusion zone established around the property (stock image) 

The mortar was discovered by a construction crew in Reina Street, Bondi at about 12pm on Friday. 

It was then transported by police and SES officers to a Rose Bay golf club where a controlled explosion was conducted. 

Residents were informed they could return to their properties at about 6.30pm on Friday. 

The grenade was then transported to a nearby golf club where a trench was dug, sandbags packed on top of the device and it was detonated just before 6pm
