‘It smells horrendous’: Families are hit out at supermarkets including Tesco and Morrisons after discovering their Christmas dinner is ruined by ‘rotten’ and ‘stinking’ turkeys

Christmas dinners across the country have been ruined by rancid and rotting turkeys and chickens that were sold by various supermarkets.
Some people who bought festive poultry from Tesco, Aldi and Morrisons were forced to make last minute changes to their meals when they found their meat covered in mould.

Mary Hannam-Norris said: ‘We haven’t long opened our fresh Christmas turkey crown purchased from your store dated use by December 26. And it’s gone off! It stinks.
‘This is the first year I have hosted Christmas dinner and I am heart broken to not have any meat to feed my family and guests.
‘Deeply disappointed. What poor quality.’
One unhappy customer blamed Tesco for ruining their Christmas and posted a picture of a turkey with a large gash in its back surrounded by what appeared to be rotten flesh.
According to British Turkey, a rotten bird will smell ‘very gamey or acrid’.

The website states: ‘The flesh could also have a greenish tinge and feel quite slimy. If in any doubt, don’t risk it, bin it.
‘The flesh should be in good colour and look moist in appearance with no dry flaky patches.’

‘Customers can return any product that they are not satisfied with to their nearest store for a full refund, or alternatively contact our customer services department.’
A Tesco spokesperson said: ‘The turkey is an important part of many Christmas dinners, so we take great care when selecting and preparing our turkeys.
‘We’re sorry to hear about this incident and if Beth returns the product to one of our stores we can investigate further.’
