Family Feud contestant to get $10,000 from Popeyes after an on-air gaffe

A Family Feud Canada contestant went viral after mistaking Popeye’s favorite food with chicken -costing her family a $10,000 prize- but is receiving a large payday from the fast food chain.

During a Thursday night episode, contestant Eve Dubois fumbled a critical question during the sudden death moment, where one correct answer is needed to advance to play for the grand prize.

After Dubois took the podium against Logan Tomlin, host Gerry Dee posed the question, ‘What is Popeye’s favorite food?’

Dubois quickly buzzed in and, with unbounded confidence, exclaimed ‘chicken!’

The Manitoba native proceeded to eagerly shimmy with a victory dance while her stunned family watched on it complete shock.

Unfortunately, the question referred to the famous cartoon character Popeye, whose favorite food is spinach, not the popular southern fried restaurant.

It only took a few moments for Dubois to realize her mistake, flashing the camera a large wide-eyed look of disbelief at the silly revelation.

Although the on-air goof may have caused some embarrassment, Dubois will walk away with $10,000 worth of Popeyes after catching the eye of Popeyes Chicken.

Adweek reports that Popeyes agency Gut Miami pitched the idea to send Dubois a thank-you gift for the shout out.

The company revealed in a tweet that they were presenting her with a $10,000 check with her name on it.

‘Our survey says you got that right. DM us to claim your $10,000 worth of Popeyes,’ they wrote.

Executives at Popeyes were grateful for the flub as it roused another round of excitement for the brand.

Bruno Cardinali, the head of Popeyes North American marketing, said Dubois answer shows just how their presence is successfully growing in the market.

‘This happened in Canada, where we still don’t have our new chicken sandwich but a good and growing presence,’ he said.

‘We tracked and saw a huge spike in Popeyes conversations up north since August, and her reaction and response was another great demonstration of how Popeyes is really part of culture and top of mind…even more so than the sailor man!’

Fernando Machado, global CMO of Popeyes and Burger King, said the company received a wave of links to the clip after it blew up on Friday.

He said: ‘We started getting emails and tweets about the Feud in the morning. Our reaction was surprise, delight and laughter.’

‘It’s amazing how Popeyes became so top of mind when it comes to chicken, all driven by the great tasting products we have, especially the chicken sandwich, which was the talk of the town in 2019.’

A frenzy surrounded Popeyes Chicken sandwich in 2019 after it was announced August that it would be debuting it for the first time.

It proved immensely popular, causing several Popeyes’ locations to quickly sell out as fans clamored for a bite.

The company ran out of six weeks’ worth of supply in less than two weeks, and was forced to restock.

By October 2019, Popeyes’ same-store sales surged 10.2 percent in the third quarter, far exceeding the company’s ambitious expectations.

‘About 65% of the U.S. hasn’t tried Popeyes and we know when we get a guest to try a product, it’s preferred over other chicken QSR,’ Jose Cil, Restaurant Brands’ CEO told Restaurant Business.

‘Our goal is to have people try the product. When they try the product, they come back for more.’
