Metres from death: Family is horrified after spotting a crocodile in their innocent holiday snap

  • A young family have had a close encounter with a deadly crocodile on holiday
  • Emma Murphy, stopped to take photo of a billabong, unaware of the danger
  • Crocodile was just 10 metres away from her family, watching under the water
  • She didn’t discover the crocodile until she got home and looked at the photos

A family have been left horrified after unknowingly coming just metres from death while on a family holiday.

Emma Murphy, husband Matthew, and two their two kids – Boston, 8, and Angus, 6 – were visiting Litchfield National Park, southwest of Darwin, last month when they stopped by a billabong.

When Mr Murphy opened the car door to take a photo, he did not realise an enormous crocodile was lurking just below the surface of the water.

Emma Murphy and her family were visiting Litchfield National Park, about 100km southwest of Darwin, last month when they stopped by a billabong to take this photo, not realising they were not alone

They had no fence or protection between them and the deadly reptile, but were unaware of their close call until after they got home and looked at the pictures.

‘I zoomed in, in case I missed something and realised, “Oh, my God. A croc was watching us”,’ Ms Murphy told Yahoo News Australia.

‘It’s hard to make out, but the scaly bumps of a crocodile’s back do appear to be slightly protruding out of the water.’

She is adamant that the croc had been watching the family and was glad she listened to her instincts at the time, telling her family to stay in the car.

‘There was something eerie about it when we pulled up,’ she said.

She revealed it was the second time the family had visited the area, and that last time Mr Murphy got even closer to the water.

Mrs Murphy said as its a popular tourist destination, the crocodile may become used to the constant torrent people stopping by.

‘He might have been waiting for that one idiot who gets too close,’ she said.

The Murphy’s close call comes after a swimmer was ‘nipped’ by a crocodile at Wangi Falls in the Northern Territory on Sunday.

The incident caused the swimming pool to close down until the freshwater crocodile was removed.

‘Unfortunately a cranky freshwater crocodile has nipped someone at Wangi Falls this afternoon,’ NT Parks and Wildlife said at the time.
