Family of evil killer who doused his wife and three children in petrol speak out for the first time

The family of evil killer Rowan Charles Baxter have admitted they are ashamed to be related to him, after he burned his wife and three children alive.

Hannah Clarke, 31, was killed along with her young children after her abusive husband doused them in petrol and set them alight on Wednesday morning.

Her parents and brother left viewers in tears in an emotional TV interview on Friday night, paying tribute to Hannah and her kids Aaliyah, 6, Laianah, 4, and Trey, 3.

But nothing had been heard from Baxter’s side of the family.

Now one couple, who said they were related to the killer, said they ‘felt guilty just knowing him’.

Arriving at the scene of the horror blaze in Camp Hill, Brisbane, the unidentified couple wept and told the Australian about their connection to evil Baxter.

After looking at the tributes left at the scene by well-wishers, a man said: ‘We’re related to Rowan.

‘We feel so guilty, just knowing him.”

In a massacre which rocked Australia, Baxter attacked his family after putting his wife through years of emotional, sexual and financial abuse.

Despite heroic attempts by passersby, their children all died at the scene on Wednesday morning, while Baxter stabbed himself in the chest.

Their mother died later in hospital.

Just days after their daughter and grandchildren were brutally burned alive, Hannah’s parents Lloyd and Suzanne Clarke explained the horrific extent of their family’s suffering.

Her parents said she suffered burns to 97 per cent of her body – with only the sole of one foot left untouched.

Hannah’s devastated mother revealed she had even discussed writing a will, saying: ‘She said to me only last week, ‘Mum should I do a will?

‘What happens to my babies if he kills me? Because he’ll go to jail for murder, who gets my children?’

‘She said, ”I want you and dad to have them or Nat. I don’t want his family to have them”.’

It comes as Brisbane Broncos star Sam Thaiday was said to be devastated by the horrific murder-suicide, having previously trained at the couple’s gym.

The star was said to be ‘like a shell’, with his wife Rachel even reaching out to Baxter in the weeks before the attack.

His wife explained that when Thaiday found out about Wednesdays horror attack, he said he ‘just wanted to see the girls’, according to the Courier Mail.

The couple have two young daughters of their own, Gracie and Ellsie.

Mrs Thaiday explained her husband ‘spent a large part of his last year of footy with’ Baxter – himself a wannabee rugby league player – in 2018.

‘We are both in shock. Sam’s like a shell,’ she said.

‘We both lost a friend when we were 21. He took his own life. Sam had reached out to him – just to reach out and see if he’s OK.

‘I don’t think anyone could foresee that (murder-suicide) happening.’

Hannah’s family said the dedicated mum would do anything for the young kids, and was working to start a new life for them.

Despite suffering burns to 97 per cent of her body during the horrific attack, she remarkably managed to cling on to life long enough to tell police what had happened.

‘She did everything for those kids,’ her father Lloyd explained.

‘To the end she fought to make sure if he survived he got punished doing to her babies. She was so brave.

Sat clutching each other’s hand during the interview on A Current Affair, the Clarkes said they began to fear for their daughter’s safety when she finally left her abusive husband in November last year.

He hadn’t been physically abusive to her before that, instead using financial, sexual and emotional manipulation.

Asked whether she was concerned about her daughter’s life, her mother said: ‘More so when she was getting ready to leave.

‘While he felt he was still in control of the situation it was all not physically as dangerous.

Speaking exclusively to Daily Mail Australia earlier this week, her parents said their daughter had finally broken free from the monstrous fitness fanatic.

But he launched a campaign of stalking and harassment, and was due in court after breaching a domestic violence restraining order.

Ms Clarke and the three children had been living with her parents as she tried to escape her evil husband.

The murdered mum told friends she was a ‘survivor not a victim’ in a gut-wrenching final Instagram post just days before her death.

After finally breaking free from her evil husband, she said would ‘never let anyone mistreat her again’ and hoped her daughters would ‘grow up being strong women’.

Ms Clarke had suffered at the hands of her abusive husband for more than 10 years, before finally leaving him in November.

Writing on social media during the new year period, she said: ‘I am a strong woman.

‘I don’t sit around feeling sorry for myself nor will I ever let anyone mistreat me again.

‘I don’t respond people who dictate to me or try to bring me down.

‘I am a survivor not a victim.

‘I am in control of my life and there’s nothing I can’t achieve.

‘My girls will grow up being strong women who understand their worth.’

Friends revealed Ms Clarke was the victim of years of emotional, financial and sexual abuse.

BRISBANE MURDER-SUICIDE: HOW COWARDLY RAMPAGE UNFOLDED

JANUARY, 2020

Queensland Police officers are called to a family violence incident that allegedly involved the couple.

WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 19 – EARLY MORNING:

Ex-NRL star Rowan Charles Baxter, 42, is spotted filling a jerry can with fuel at a local service station.

8.20AM:

Baxter dives into his estranged wife Hannah Clarke’s white Kia Sportage as she was preparing to do the school drop off on Raven Street, Camp Hill, a wealthy suburb of Brisbane.

He douses Ms Clarke, 31, and their three children – Aaliyah, six, Laianah, four, and Trey, three – in petrol and sets the car alight.

Neighbours hear an explosion which sounded like a ‘gas bottle’ blast. At least four explosions followed.

Baxter grabs a knife from the SUV and stabs himself in the chest.

He tries to stop neighbours from saving his wife and children before dying in the street.

Ms Clarke escapes the burning car and screams: ‘He’s poured petrol on me.’

Horrified witnesses see her skin peeling off her body.

One heroic neighbour hoses her down in an attempt to save her life and suffers burns himself.

She is rushed to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a critical condition.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT:

Ms Clarke dies in hospital from the horrendous burns she suffered in the quadruple murder suicide.

WHO WAS ROWAN BAXTER?

Rowan Baxter was an ex-NRL player once contracted to the New Zealand Warriors.

He was a member of the President’s Selection 2005 pre-season team and worked in the sports and fitness industry for the last 20 years of his life.

He was raised in Tauranga, on New Zealand’s North Island, before moving to Australia.

Baxter lived in Brisbane alongside his wife, Hannah, and three children until as recently as late last year, when the couple separated.

The 42-year-old opened a gym, Intergr8 and CrossFit SMC in Capalaba, with his wife, but the pair closed it down as they worked through their split.

Ex-Brisbane Broncos players Sam Thaiday and Matt Gillett have been known to train in the gym.

The ex-sportsman’s business website described him as an accomplished body weight trainer for NRL and AFL teams.

Unsuspecting family and friends believed he was a loving and dedicated father.
