Family’s dream £3,000 luxury break in Lanzarote is ruined by ‘lecherous’ builders

‘Lecherous’ workmen carrying out construction around a hotel pool forced a family to spend money on a Lanzarote beach instead of using their all-inclusive booking.

Julie Reeves, 42, and her husband David, 51, spent £3,000 on an all-inclusive family holiday to Lanzarote.

The couple travelled from Sheffield to spend a week at the H10 Lanzarote Princess in Playa Blanca with their daughter Jessica and Julie’s niece Ria.

But their relaxing holiday turned in to a nightmare when ‘lecherous’ workmen made the two 13-year-old girls feel uncomfortable by ‘staring’.

During the first day of their holiday, on April 1, the family were hounded by the ‘horrendous’ poolside construction.

Drilling, dust and workmen constantly passing with wheelbarrows meant the family could not relax and enjoy their time by the pool.

Choosing to spend time at the beach meant the holidaymakers could not make use of their all-inclusive wristbands.

Instead they spent hundreds of pounds on sunbeds, parasols, food, drink and entertainment for the girls.

Julie said: ‘We arrived to a construction site around the pool area with pneumatic drills, cement mixers , electric saws and tile cutters.

‘Dust was flying over us continually and lecherous workmen were constantly up and down with wheelbarrows.

‘On that first day we went in early because we had had enough of the noise and the girls didn’t feel comfortable said the workmen were staring which made me feel sick.’

‘We ended up spending ever day at the beach after the first day as it was horrendous. It cost us a fortune.’

But after reporting the conditions to TUI, who the holiday was booked through, a representative offered them an upgrade to privileged.

Julie, a dance teacher, added: ‘It really amounted to nothing. Water and chocolates at night. We were already all inclusive and did not want an upgrade on a future stay.

‘We went back to the representative who then offered us £250 compensation or £350 off a future stay again travelling with TUI. It was an insult.

‘We had probably spent that the two days we had been at the beach up to then.

‘We ended up spending all week there and nothing could change the fact the noise made it impossible to enjoy the hotel in the day time.’

And this was not the first time the couple had suffered a holiday from hell after booking through TUI.

Two years ago, while Julie was in recovery from cancer treatment, the couple travelled to Parga, Greece, for David’s 50th birthday.

But they were not warned the hotel and resort they were staying was suffering from a ‘horrendous’ bug for three weeks.

Julie’s post-cancer treatment medication meant she had a low immune system and quickly contracted the illness.

She said: ‘It was exactly the same situation this time. We did complain but after more than three months of phone calls and emails with no response we let it go.

‘We put our trust in TUI one more time and yet again they have failed us greatly, taken our money and not delivered what was promised.’

A TUI spokesman said: ‘We’re sorry to hear of the Reeves party’s experience in Lanzarote.

‘We were not made aware of the planned building so were unable to notify the customers before they travelled, which we will be addressing with our hotel partner.

‘We will also be investigating other concerns the customers have raised. We will be in contact with the customers directly to apologise and offer a gesture of goodwill.’
